Extended Warranty

I only purchased my 2011 e89 23i in June. Yesterday I received a letter from BMW stating my 3 year warranty is about to expire and they're asking if I want to renew it for 12 months at a cost of about £620ish for the bells and whistles one. The car has only done 8000 miles and is in daily use. So my question is, is it worth the renewal? Has anyone used a 3rd party warranty company, what was your experience with a claim etc. :driving:

That sounds a bit high. Guys on hear have had cheaper quotes on 35i & is's so I would be checking that out. However I would ask do you need the roadside assistance or could you go for the warranty without assistance and have a stand alone assistance package with the RAC, AA, Green Flag etc? Could work out cheaper. I assume you are also looking at a warranty with zero to pay if you do have any issues?

You may want to get a quote for a third party warranty, not sure if they offer assistance like the one you are talking about. However people have mentioned that they don't always want to pay for the work if you take the car to a franchise dealer and the service history has to be on time and complete otherwise they will wriggle out of it, saying that BMW would do the same too.

I suppose it all depends on if you will think that you will need it. I know that with my E88 I hadn't had any real issues so I didn't got for the warranty but 10 days later the hydro unit went, however cost to fix was £400 whilst the warranty was £500 and the excess was £150 so I would have paid out more to have this one bit fixed if I had gone via the warranty than what I ended up paying. Im sure others will be able to advise better on your car.

One think I will say is the roof may be the only think you might need it for. Being a folding hard top, its full of switches and if anything goes wrong it might be costly to sort. I know that when my warranty cover comes in I will be sticking with BMW for the DTC, roof and that fact that it also covers the Satnav if you have it too, not sure how many third parties would cover these to he honest.

**EDIT - I've just got my mate to look up what he would be quoted on his 23i and its showing as £100 excess or £250 and £448 a year for the comprehensive with no assistance and £100 excess or £342.99 for £250 excess and no assistance. Even with assistance on the £100 excess its only £536 so you might want to enquire online as to what the price is.

Assume this was not an AUC car then as you would get 12 months warranty from June.

The roof is a worry, but apart from one or two people there are few reported problems. Unless I was doing high mileage I think I would put the money in the pot each month instead.

£48 /month for the bells & whistles cover ?? Flippin 'eck take it ! ...Ive just been quoted £980 for my 3 year old F11 520d M sport with zero excess !

Altenernative is £609 p.a. or £56/month with a £250 x/s. On top of that I 'e got to pay £120/year for the 'Connected Drive' and I've also been told that the 5 Year Free Servicing runs out at 61k which will only just be at the start of year 4, I reckon ( I'm doing about 16k a year)

Its at this point you consider buying a new motor instead :x

I would avoid the BMW warranty like the plague
My Roof pump failed and the warranty people refused to cover because the drain hole were blocked and there was water in cavity flooding the pump
Sounds plausible except when my dealer replaced they found the drain hole clean and clear and no sign of water ever having sat in area and took photos to prove
BMW warranty insisted that the dealer told them the drains were blocked
Impass
except when challenged Dealer principle investigated and then listened to the recording of the call ( yes they record all calls to BMW warranty with it seems just cause )
and the Claims manager would not accept the information and insisted on rejecting because of blocked drains
Car done 26K always garaged and frankly only used when sun is shining
So they lie and will use any excuse valid or made up to avoid paying out .
I had paid them more than the Bl**** pump cost in premiums .........
Your choice ...

However you have a E85 and not a metal roof E89 but all experience of the warranty process.

I'm sure its easier said than done for some people to put the money aside incase of any issues with their car so might find the peace of mind of the warranty a nice option.
