Experienced the M, it was jerky

I'm torned between an 3.0si and a M. I noticed the si drove a lot smoother as far as going through the gears. On the M the car seemed to jerk a lot, particularly 1st to 2nd (at slow speeds). Is this typical of a high performance cars :driving: or will I eventually get used to driving it and understanding it characteristics?

The throttle in the M is much sharper than the si version and you will get used to it quite quickly. I have had my M for little more than a week and I can drive it pretty smoothly now.

The throttle is very sensitive, but the CDV (Clutch Delay Valve - plenty of info about it on here and Google) doesn't help it either. I found it very frustrating on my first drive, but accepted that I would be able to remove a lot of the jerkiness with a replacement CDV once I'd bought the car.

Sure enough, with a new CDV in my car I no longer had any problems with the 1st-2nd gear change.

It seems like you find a number of places to source your mods from. Is there anybody you would recommend? I have been googling for it but every shop I find has quite a limited range of parts.

LOL...thats what I thought when I first got my "Z"..couldn't find any add ons....now 20,000.00 later that has all changed. Get a second job, your going to need it

Thanks for the replies guys & gals. I don't think I will let the jerkiness discourage me from the M. I think it will just get smoother as I spend more time behind the wheel.

It certainly will and like Six said, the CDV will go some way to assist.

CDV, just got off of http://www.zeckhausen.com, for $35 plus shipping I can solve this problem. Awesome. Now my question is, although it is probably an easy DIY, will BMW install for me without voiding the warranty

Unless you knew a technician at your local dealer very well and he was prepared to turn a blind eye, then no. Best to keep it separate from BMW. It is an easy job, any good, reputable local garage should be able to do the job comfortably.

If you're local to Surrey, I know a guy that will do it for about £40... He did mine, and All Pina's...

I cant say i have noticed any jerkiness on my M on takeoff unless i use the sports button.
I do agree though that the 3.0Si Coupe loaner i had was more driveable but i assume thats just the power difference

Wow! Bl**dy H*ll! Changing the CDV makes a night and day difference!!

I thought that my feet had compensated for the CDV but I was wrong. The Z4M with the modified CDV is FANTASTIC!!

Welcome to the CDV-less world.... about bloody time you installed it!

It does doesn't it? I keep forgetting now, since it's so long ago that I made the change. It doesn't help that there are people that say they did the CDV mod and didn't notice any difference - but I do distinctly remember the first time I drove the car without the CDV that 5 minutes down the road, I realised I'd not been having to think about my gearchanges anymore...

I am sorry I waited so long!! You should have knocked some sense into me!

It makes one hell of a difference. I had it done this morning. Usually I would feather the cluch and still come out jerky about 10-20% of the time. Today - it was smooth as silk. I dropped a friend off to pick up his car this afternoon after work. He asked me if I had been practicing my shifts  because his head did not 'bob' anymore
