Everybody says 19" are uncomfortable

But what if they have the same tyre profile as an 18" wheel? Obviously that means it will be 1" bigger diameter overall, 1/2" at the top, but is there room for it on an E86 coupe with Sport suspension?

ie. I have 18" wheels with 225/40 at the front, and I've read that 19" would normally use 225/35 so it doesn't make the wheel bigger. But will a 225/40 fit on a 19"?

My M has 235/35 x 19 tyres on the front and being on coil-overs it's about 20mm lower than standard but that seems to work OK (so far).

A 225/40 tyre would theoretically only have 7.75mm more sidewall than what I have so if the car isn't lowered I can't see why it should be a problem.

But hopefully our wheel expert, mr wilks, will know for sure.

Yes op 225 40 19 will fit a 8j or 8.5j front no problem , that would be the stock tyre size for the E46 M3 along with a 255 35 19 rear which is always my preference over a 265-30 or worse still as with the factory spec on E89 255-30-19
Its possibly a bit ott on E85/E86 so 235 35 19 is also worth considering on the front .
You can also increase comfort considerably ( without compromise on grip) simply by the brand of tyre you choose .
Always lots to consider when replacing tyres

To be honest I don't even know what width front i'll get yet, 8" or 8.5", so my numbers are just theoretical - in the hope that I can have the same depth of side wall for comfort. But seeing as people fit the 'normal size' with lowered suspension, then yeh I guess a slightly bigger tyre with standard suspension should also fit.

Are there brands that are known for being more comfortable then? I'm assuming that would be a softer sidewall? Anybody offer try-before-you-buy? :-P

The rim diameter will be 1” bigger but the overall diameter will depend on what tyres you use.

I’m very happy with 245/35 front and 265/35 rear, with a slight front arch rub (car is lowered a bit), but most of the comfort gains can be had by just switching to a /35 rear instead of the /30 most people go for. You sit so close to the rear axle.

Yep, that 265/35 is an even higher profile tyre than what I currently run on my 18"s, and if you can fit that tyre on 19"s (and lowered), then i'll obviously be fine. Do you have a pic of your rear 265/35R19?

If you use willtheyfit.com you can have a play around with the various widths and profiles to see what the impact on diameter will be. Handily it also tells you what the impact on your speedo will be - too extreme an increase in diameter will throw your speedo out by a few miles per hour.

Yeh I use that all the time - but it doesn't tell me what I was actually trying to find out with this post - whether it will fit your arches or if it'll rub.

It looks like a nice fit. What width and offset are your wheels?

8.5” ET44 (10mm spacer so ET34)
9.5” ET27

Nice & doesn't look "over "tyred at all 8) My CSLs are in for refurb & i'm just waiting for my new rubber to be delivered , 255 35 19 ive gone for

Thanks. I might drop down to 255/35 as well (and 235/35 fronts) when I replace these as most modern tyres seem to have far chunkier sidewalks than the Vortis (PSS/PS4S especially).

What do you mean by "chunkier sidewalls"? Do you mean they stick out more at the side? (ie. the opposite of stretching tyres)

Yes. Squarer shoulders and more rim protection, adding up to a fair bit more rubber on the sidewall of the tyre.

That sounds good then, i'd keep them.

It’s all relative I guess, the numpty who had mine before me put runflats on the 224s when I changed to CSLs on non runflats And changed to eibachs at the same time, the ride improved.
Standard 224 sizes and standard CSL sizes.
It runs about as hard as my R56 JCW

Run flats are the worst tyres ever though.

Those are exactly the sizes and offsets I have on mine, but I couldn't find a brand name on them.

Do you know what brand yours are? I'm assuming they are probably the same.

Thanks.

BBS. They're not reps.

Nice - I'm assuming BBS stamp them somewhere? Mine did come with BBS centre caps (that I have changed)!
