Nice selection of cars there, we all couldn't afford cars like when we were younger.wish i could have, house and family normally controlled what i bought.
i owned a mk5 golf before my z and found it to be a very good car, it was my first golf and i would defiantly recommend one to anyone, but everyone has there own style and opinion.

I like the Golfs but have never loved them or wanted one. I've always thought they were a bit dull and for a while they weren't much good to drive either, but I think the MK5 got things back on track in that respect.

Bit unfair. He's just making the point that to some a car needs to look good as well as being capable. I've never owned BMWs before the Z series came out and was never tempted by M3s for the same reason - they are just 'normal' cars that have been tickled up. I prefer a car that was always a sports car right from the initial design brief. The Zed is totally that.dans6490 said:

Bought a brand new MK3 Golf GTi in 1999, mostly because I needed a solid reliable car for my daily commute and business trips but still wanted to be able to have some fun. It spent more time at the (useless) dealers than any car I've had before or since (and that includes an Austin Maestro ffs!!). Tarnished my view of the brand and their dealers forever.
Won't even look at Audi, having tried twice to buy one in recent years but been met with truly shoddy customer service in the showroom.
I'm sure they're a different world now and I hope he has many miles of fun with it but it's not a brand I'll be trying again.

I'm not a great fan of Audi/ VW myself..
Although I have owned loads of Mk1,2 and 3 golf GTi's and VR's, a couple of Audi cabs and and an Audi Quattro.
The Mk4 was a no no for me but I like the mk5/6's... The quality and reliability really improved,although when new you paid a premium as a second hand buy they are a bargain.

The aforementioned Austin Maestro is what I was driving at 22, a 1.3 City that I must've put about 80,000 miles on in 3 years and the only time it saw a mechanic was for routine services. Wasn't much fun to drive and cornered like the QE2 but it never let me down and was cheap as chips to run.
i think i was either looking at this exact car - or one VERY like it the other day, for SWMBO (and really because i have a soft spot for the mk5 GTI's!) 
I'm not sure if it would add any practicality to our lifestyle though, the M Coupe boot isnt that bad, so anything we got would have to be slightly better on fuel and much better on practicality (4 seats / boot space / smart looking).
Either way - great looking car, wish i had bought that at 22, i had a saab 9-3 turbo

Hopefully if he leaves it standard itl be a good step towards the R32 he really wants although he's been sending me internet posts featuring simllar cars "tweaked" up to 400bhp

Not too worried dom , with these cars its more important to get low owners & preferably not from inner city's where they have been thrashed over every speedbump around
pretty sure this has had a decent life with last owner 7 years having the car on "disabled" tax i don't think its been hammered too much & a recent £1400 timing belt & brake service at Inchcape VW tells me the owner wasn't scared to spend on it Always a gamble with a used car but majority of us have to risk it
My very first car was a Jaguar Mk4 3.5 ltr that I bought for £50.00 in 1962!! One of the early things that I did was to take it down to the M1 and have a blast at 100mph+ 
as there were no speed restrictions on the motorway in those days. Happy days!
I've had loads of nice cars since and am happy enough with my current Mercedes S-Class, Z4 M Coupe & Z4 3.0i roadster but wish I still had it as it would be worth a bomb now!
