EPS Going....going....

....not quite gone yet but have a feeling in me watter!

Basically, EPS light fires, steering jolts (very uncomfortable and provides a reasonable fright) like it's on lock when not fully on left/right lock but not far off. Almost like it's turning too far in one direction or tuther.

Yep, it's heat related and ticks many issues raised with sticky steering, only on lock though and only when the cockpit temp is high (as it will be being in Scotland). It's a mare for parking, either EPS goes completely (need Poppeye arms at crawling speed) or returns, soon to stop suddenly (jolt). Managed to get myself stuff at a car dealership for the missus, tight 3 pointer and had to stop, cool (and blast the freeze button), ignite and complete the manoeuvre much to my embarrassment and sore wrists (the missus stopped suggesting things after the second sweary word).

I can force the issue with heat so here's the DIS screens...

Not present as light went off moving away from full lock. Other codes are being dealt with, front load sensor for headlights was replaced last week and showing again :headbang:

Complains about voltage/phase and OK, I get the charger warning running diags but battery is good and well maintained. A while ago working on DSC issues which turned out to be Steering Angle Sensor related so that has been recalibrated correctly. It's not the same symptoms as the notchy/sticky steering, car is and drives perfectly other than this issue but did the drill/lube fix anyway (no change). No-one seems to have nailed the fix other than swapping out the column (BMW apparently redesigned the column after a certain date)?

There's mentions on Yaw sensor but not sure where this is located? Under voltage it certainly isn't though something's obviously under load and subject to heat. Asked for all the steering joints to be cleaned/lubricated during the last specialist service which they showed me. Would love to say those words and just swap out the column, may eventually have to! It's been a big spend over the last 3-4 months and I'm kinda getting to 'that' point, the missus can drive me to the dealership!

Any thoughts guys? Pls?

What is the battery voltage during idle?
how much does it change when steering? (so test when the car sits still and turn the steering wheel)

First diagnose if you have or havent got an electric power problem (battery/altenator/wiring) because some faults hint to that.

Thanks mate, explains the systems well, my symptoms=p14/15 though it doesn't unfortunately describe the overloading causes and "MAY notice the loss of assist" err uh huh?

Sure I'd read of another sensor being on the column so must just be the Angle sensor, thanks again.

Going to check the values again tomorrow but remember live data from INPA was showing mucho fluctuation, armed with the PDF on dynamics and those shutdown voltages, it may help, cheers!

Suppose, once verified and I'm sure this is it, question is what to do about it other than give to electrics guru? Sounds like the motor control that sits on the column is getting too hot though as if it was electrics/voltage, cooling the vents (dash and floor) wouldn't make much difference when it does?

Mechanical rack anyone?

Torque sensor, part 2 page 9

:hattip:

Actually thought ditching the from RFT's would have resolved this, if it was dragging/overloading, the tyres weren't their best but legal. AS2's on now but oh well, silly me!

Ewazix, lol, ta  ! Was that sensor I'd head about more than the Yaw sensor under the seat, there's a writeup for Torque on here somewhere.

Beginning to think, strip, replace both sensors and see what we've got.....else it's a breakers yard for moi and why was this column not recalled?

:tumbleweed:

Zed, I'm in Renfrewshire too!

Going back to when I had the 2003 plate 2.5 Z4 from 2005 - 2008...

Power Steering died after getting the Air Con unit replaced under warranty.

Turns out the firmware version on the Air Con unit conflicted with the Power Steering Unit and caused the Power Steering to fail.

After the firmware on the Air Con Unit was flashed to a previous version the power steering was back to normal.

Could it be that any issues with Power Steering is actually a Firmware problem with possibly the new or old version the steering column and not actually a mechanical issue?

Skelters, alright fella....how's the weather in sunny Greenock (think you're a little higher up :) )?

I see the logic (huh) suppose thats a hierarchy thing on the ECU which is a complete guess of course. Do you know if the out of sync firmwares show errors in diags, or how they/you knew?

Wish it was but there's been nothing needed coding or replaced for a few years, this issue is getting gradually worse over the past 6 months or so.

Checking the voltages tomorrow, batt on maintenance charge tonight, check alternator etc and try zero in on this. I could of course leave the heating off, that would fix it!

One shall try remain positive!
