I am sure oil is "degraded" after 100 miles, but it is only trivially degraded so people don't change their oil every 100 miles. The issue is whether 8k is prudent or ridiculous, whether 15k is absolutely fine or BMW are a bit cavalier with their advice.
The other thing is how many miles do these engines have in them if treated perfectly? If the answer is 300k or 400k (which I believe is possible) then there's a strong argument that servicing them a bit less often and accepting that you'll never get more than 250k out of the engine might be quite rational considering how few cars make it to 200k.
That's why people err on the side of caution for the sake of £50, and change more often in the belief that it's helping their car live longer.
