Engine oil recommendations?

I’m in two minds whether to do mine or not, only done 2000 miles in the last year.Just looked on Autodoc and i can pick up 20l of Total ineo mc3 5w30 for 150€ which is a bit of a bargain.
Bear in mind that this is a C3 spec oil, which is low in specific additives which clog up GPFs/DPFs. Not necessarily the right type of oil for an older car without these extra emissions control devices. My personal choice is A3/B4 for my older cars that get driven hard and changed regularly.

Interesting, thanks mate you just made me read through the whole thread again😉
I found this oil on autodoc which works out a lot cheaper 5w/40 synthetic LL01 A3/B4 which should be fine due to summer temps reaching 37 degrees some days where i live, any thoughts?

No experience with that specific product, but the specs look good to me.
So basically using LL04 spec oils is not worth it in our old petrol z’s, LL01 is cheaper too,i will wait until next year until changing it,i’m running 2 cars anyhow so works out ok.

I think you need to think about what the numbers mean and make your choice accordingly.
Europe can get pretty bloody cold, so 0W30 is often recommended for the e89 35i.

What do the two numbers mean? The number before the W is the cold viscosity - this should be low so your oil coats all of the moving parts of the cold engine quickly. The number after the W is the viscosity when hot - a high number is better.

I live in Australia and our summers often have weather 30-40 deg C so I need good high temperature protection. I will choose 40 rahter than 30.

Also the N54 has twin turbos. Turbos run incredibly hot - around 900degrees C -because they are powered by hot exhaust gas and there's nothing to cool them except oil. (Don't just switch off the engine after hard driving; let the oil ciruculate idling for some time so you don't cook the oil on the turbo) Turbos will last longer with 40.

Additionally, my car has done a lot of Kms (nearly 200'000) and for old motors a higher viscosity is often recommended because it's thicker at high temperatures (100deg C) and so old motors will burn less oil if it is 5W40.

Regarding LL01 (BMW's recommended or approved oil) this for warranty - how many of us are still in the warranty period of their e89? lol not me!
