ENGINE MOUNTS

I WAS DRIVING THE M WHEN THE CAR STARTED VIBRATING ALL OVER. MECHANIC HAD A LOOK AN APPARENTLY THE BOLTS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAD COME LOOSE, THE ENGINE MOVED DOWNWARDS, RESULTING IN THE SUMP TOUCHING THE SWAY BAR :o
NOW I DID A BIT OF A SEARCH ON THIS FORUM TOGETHER WITH ZPOST AND THE NET, AND APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. MY CAR HAS 12,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK AND THE BOLTS CAME LOOSE. I FOUND A COPY OF THE BMW SIB (SI B 22 01 09) WHERE THEY CLAME THAT THE BOLTS CAN COME LOOSE DUE TO PROLONGED HEAT EXPOSURE TO THE RIGHT SIDE ENGINE MOUNT. I WENT TO THE BMW DEALER AND SHOWED HIM THIS SIB. SO FAR BMW INTERNATIONAL HAVE NOT RECOGNIZED THIS AS A PROBLEM AND ARE REFUSING TO COVER THE COST. I WAS OFFERED A SILLY 20% DISCOUNT BY THE LOCAL DEALER.
HAS ANYONE SUFFERED FROM THIS? DID THE DEALER COVER THE EXPENSE? IF NOT CHECK YOURS OUT PERIODICALLY. I THIONK I ALSO READ THAT THE BOLTS ON THE BACK ARBS TEND TO GET LOOSE. THESE ARE THINGS I DEFINITELY DID NOT EXPECT ON SUCH A CAR.
IF THEY STILL REFUSE TO RECOGNIZE THE SIB I MIGHT GET MY PERSONAL MECHANIC TO DO THE JOB AND THEN SUE THEM. PROBLEM IS THAT HE HAS TO START DISMANTLING TO KNOW HOW MUCH WORK IS INVOLVED. THE BOLTS ARE APPARENTLY VERY HARD TO GET TO WITHOUT REMOVING STEERING RACK ETC.

if they are hard to get to, i guess they cant be checked easily??

Is this M specific or all E85/86

dont look that hard to get to from what i can see??? infact i can reach down and touch them??anyhow ive already checked and keep them Tq'd as per spec! all you need is a very long extension with one of those sets thats allows the socket to rock slightly.... jobs a good un. but yes im aware these can come loose, great time to swap out for uprated mounts while you their and maybe use some thread locker.

MAYBE CHECKING TEHY ARE TIGHTENED IS EASIER, BUT IN MY CASE EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE LIFTED BACK IN PLACE. THE LOWER BOLTS ARE VISIBLE FROM THE UNDERSIDE, HOWEVER THE TOP SEEM HARDER TO GET TO.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR UPRATED MOUNTS? I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THEY USED 10.9 BOLTS INSTEAD OF 8.8 AND SOME SPECIAL NUTS THAT LOCK BETTER. ANY SUGGESTIONS WHETHER THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY BMW?
I ALSO READ THAT THIS IS MORE COMMON ON THE COUPE DUE TO IT BEING MORE RIGID THAN TEH ROADSTER.

hey bro.... can you caps lock off please as it makes it alittle difficult to read with my poor eyesight :-) thankyou :-)

yes you can get these from CA automotive and Yes the tranny mounts are from the same manufacturer :-) hope this has been of help :-)

And here it is....

This was an issue in the USA quite quickly after the first cars hit owners, but iirc the bulletin thing only covered MC every time I checked, & every link I can find here is the same.

I think the original posts were on z4um but here is the earliest one I can see, another coupé...

It does seem strange that only the Coupe is affected :?

And I don't believe it would be down to extra stiffness.

It's because it's only coupé owners who actually drive their cars for more than 50 miles a year :poke:

:P

So Kertein drives a coupe also? Strange it only affects coupes, surely the mountings are identical to the roadster? IIRC it was MCs that seemed to have terminal engine failures as well.

Another reason to buy an origina Z4 and not the afterthought?l?

Thanks for the link....I will try and get them to pay for it!
Is this better beedub? :D

definitely and the motor will be more stable, as will the trans, the car should feel much more taught (depending on mileage),
you will be really happy with this upgrade.... once my car gets a few more miles, ill be doing the same thing.
BTW this issue has effect numerous roadsters as well but its not a wide-spread thing... when this first came out, i printed the bullet and showed my dealer about 4 years ago.....

they said this isn't applicable on the UK cars.... they did however Re-tq the bolts.... i keep a visual check on the drivers side regularly, you'll easily see if the Nut is backing out.

one of the few things i keep a keen eye on is also the firewall braces which also come loose. 41nm if your interested! (for cars with nuts on the firewall brace)

I had exactly the same scenario with my Z3MC and BMW and their failure to do the SAME recall as they did for more than 48,000 E46 M3s with the same S54 engine. In BMW's written relies to me, they said the S54 engine in my Z3MC couldn't suffer from bearing shell failure despite my submitting to them all the evidence. When my car DID suffer bearing shell failure in 2009, BMW supplied me with a brand new engine at NO cost to myself. :D

The moral of the story is; if there's a Service Bulletin for this fault but BMW has failed to recall your car, they know of the problem, so should be legally responsible for paying to rectify any damage you suffer if it happens to your car.

It seems to be more prevalent on the Coupe (the service bulletin indicated the issue was due to assembly line problems), but they came loose on my Roadster.

$360bucks for rubber and screw bits! Seems pricey. Was thinking of doing these + tranny bushings of the red variety + short shift kit + ZHP nob. Has anyone done these yet? Its seems to, increase NVH no end so not sure thats a good thing. Wiould it not wear out the optherparts of the car?

CH.... i wouldnt go any further than the neoprene stuff!! Poly bushes for engine and tranny will be annoying!!!
