Engine mount bolts loose

So this wkend I got busy with replacing the engine mount bracket bolts and washers with a new set and out of the eight mount bracket bolts 1 had completely backed out (driver side front upper mount bolt) and 3 others were loose (2 on the drivers side and 1 on the passenger side)!

Managed to get to all 8 and applied some red loctite to the new bolts (any opinions on whether red loctite was okay to use?).

Noticable improvements include the car being smoother, gear shifts are less jerky and feel more crisp, less rattling, car feels more predictable and all in all just feels tighter.

I did replace the fcab as well so that may contribute to it and also replaced the reinforcement plate bolts with new ones given they are one time use.

Definitely a good idea to check these! Worrying to think this is a somewhat common issue, btw my z4m is a coupe 07 (Feb 2007).

How many miles on your car Viren ? Just interested, as mine is an 07 too... And little things like this eat away at my brain in idle moments

BTW, seen a few posts about these bolts coming loose, so appears to be a common problem.

i personally wouldn't have used locktite on the new bolts.. it add lubrication and can F up the Tq settings you apply, But its done now and I'm sure its fine.. Respect for doing this on your own.
i did mine and they were all present and Tq'd correctly, due to my cars modifications i can see the passenger side bolts from the top, but do check all periodically. If you have a z4m, these need checking imo, its a know issue, and something ill always keep an eye on.

Beedub - hope it's ok, I assume they would be over torqued given the lub effect. Got me a little worried now!

Bing - car has 50k miles on it, although I'm pretty sure these bolts have been loose for a very long time.

you got lucky and caught them before they back out and the engine drops causing some nasty noise and i can only imagine... some not nice damage.

Is this a top down job, or is it car on stands and remove all the undertrays job?

passgener side from the top and bottom, driver side from the bottom only... so both.

Lots of extensions needed too, get wobble type.

Its not on my to do list just yet, though am going to view another car tonight. This one is from a dealer though so will just get them to check it assuming i buy it. Was just curios more than anything.

Things i had to completely remove or just unbolt to create more room:

Under tray (remove)
Reinforcement plate (remove) - these use one time bolts which cost £26 for 8!
Vanos pressure accumulator (unbolt)
Power steering fluid reservior (unbolt 2 bolts, just creates a little more room)
Airbox (remove) - the fixings confused me but you just need to pull upwards and the lower part of the airbox pops out

Extentions help!

I wouldn't worry bing the signs are pretty obvious if they are loose :)

Obvious to most, but just assuming I am completely dim... What are the signs ?

actually their are no signs until its too late, as the OP said one of his bolts completely backed out and loose, he had no symptoms, was simply checking, much longer and the looser/ last remaining bolts snap under the pressure, their would be minor symptoms for you to detect, especially amongst the already noisy s54.

I only got the car a yr bk and so didn't have anything to compare it to however after doing it there is less rattle especially when engaging the clutch in first and also reversing uphill. It lots a little signs, others include more immediate clutch engagement, much smoother gear changes. If u drive someone's car who has properly torqued bolts, you would notice it

Hmmm. Sounds like a great excuse to have my indie install some shiny new Vibratech engine mounts whilst checking these bolts out :D

Thought you weren't going to mod this car :poke:

Engine mounts, RTAB limiters - they are not 'mods', they are performance enhancements :D

I asked for mine to be checked at the inspection 2 service. :) 2 were missing. :( All tightened and replaced now. :D That is my Feb 2007 Z4m coupe at 45000 miles.
So you'll not be worrying about those bolts tonight Bing? :fuelfire:
