Engine map

I have a friend who can map my engine. I wanted to take the car to check out the gutter when idle but he suggested I do a full remap. Has anyone had this done. I would want more power !!

works well on diesel turbos, in my experience. For NA the gains are less impressive - what engine do you have?
Of course, a remap should be informed to your insurance company, and may invalidate any warranty you have...

It may smooth the curve and make it feel more alert but won't give any more power on a Naturally Aspirated engine. Waste of time and money if you ask me but on a forced induction car can be very beneficial to both MPG and power.

I had mine done on a 2.0lt
Does make a difference but it's Minimal.
Don't worry about the idle issue, all BMW 2.0 engines of that kind do it when warm.

if its going to cost you nowt then why not?
\as tom says it will sort out flat spots and can make the car feel zingy (good if you don't have a sport button) but wont yield great gains in bhp (if any) without other significant upgrades.

Like said it may iron out a flat spot in the torque curve depends if you think there is one there in your car.

I wouldn't bother myself as your not actually getting anything for the money and it could make the car worse…

Jonny Essex will disagree he's had one and he says it feels like a sport button, but you don't actually get any performance upgrade, it will 'feel' faster but it won't be. Feel is of course subjective.

If your mate is doing it for cheap why not, if its £250 then nope.

Yes he said he would do it for £50 . The main reason was to try and sort out the idle judder. I know it's probable just part of the engine trait but it really bugs me!! Might be better taking my OCD pills instead :)

So many topics on here about the idle issue, people taken there cars back to garages 1000's of times and the wobbles still there. It doesn't effect the performer of the car.
Having had mine over 3years now and it did it from day 1, and so does my sisters BMW 120m

Good to know its a common thing. I had a golf a few years ago and the problem turned out to be a miss fire. Worried it was the sme thing all over again

I've got my 2.0l booked in to BMW specialist on Monday to have my idle checked out. I've heard that a software update can resolve this. I'll let you know how I get on...

Gains are minimal on a N/A car, for example with a stage 2 remap and exhaust on my old S4, it managed 20bhp and 30nm of torque increase, but the best bit is that it can iron all any flat spots you may have.

Compare that with the stage 2 on my RS6, and I saw 126bhp increase and a massive 284nm of torque...

Forced induction will always get better results, but I think it's also worth doing on N/A cars as well..

+1
Any gains are progressive through the curve, with zero change at idle normally.

Some people will claim 20-25bhp is do-able on the 2.0lt Z4, but that's impossible what ever other mods done. Stick them on a rolling road and it'll just about reach +8 to 10bhp and only at Redline 6000-7000rpm

I've not taken my car past 4 on the rev counter. Is it safe to take it close to the red line?

 I hope so, I bounce all my cars off that f*****er....**

it's there as a safety stop so that you can't damage the engine, so don't worry about it.... I'll leave the debate as to whether there is a point to doing it to other people... all different ways to drive vehicles

**it's a joke!!!

Is it an automatic stop, has hat happened to you?

yes, that the limiter.... honestly it's fine, it's there for safety.

I've done the sound gen mod too, and the noise of the 3.0 screaming at that last 1k revs is superb! :driving: :driving:

some automatic cars even have a limiter for when the car is in park, so you can't rev it too much.

my XKR had this, you could only rev it to 3k revs.

DIY.. You just pull a bit of foam out the black plastic tube in the engine bay (mine is the 3 litre, not sure if yours is the same)

Very easy to do... Good for a laugh...
