Edited email to BMW UK....

However, the reason I’m emailing is because yet another Z4 can be added to the list of FAILED SPRINGS which have been found during the recent MOT.

Can you let me know if there is any scheme or reduced cost fitting available for this known problem which occurs on Z4’s and E46 3 Series.

If not there should be as I have had cars over 12 years old with 130,000 miles on the clock that have never had springs fail.

Response from BMW......

Thank you for your email dated 15 March, 2008. I am sorry that you have
reason to contact us with regards to the springs failing on your
vehicle.

BMW aims to provide our customers with a premium product and to achieve
this we use high quality parts and components during manufacture. We do
accept however, that due to the electrical and mechanical nature of the
parts that they can fail at any time. I am sorry that you have
experienced component failures on your vehicle. I assure you that BMW
monitor all warranty claims and parts orders so that the quality of our
manufacturing is maintained. There is not currently a product
enhancement or recall for the failed springs, on the vehicles mentioned.

In order for BMW to look at assisting you, the vehicle needs to have
been diagnosed at a BMW Approved Dealership. If the dealer feels that
the failed component on your vehicle is due to a manufacturing defect,
then they have the means to contact BMW UK directly for assistance with
this matter.

I can assure you that BMW takes customer feedback very seriously and
your comments have been logged under case reference should you
need to contact us again.

I hope that the information provided has helped with your enquiry and
should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to
contact me.

I've replied saying that it's probably a design fault and that they should read the forums or maybe the forum members should email BMW UK about this problem.

I'll update this if I get anything worth posting from BMW UK.

hi Skelters, sorry to hear about your experience. I am purchased my Z (54 reg, 25K miles) 2 weeks ago, it is 4 months out of warranty, took it in for a service last weekend, was told both rear springs were broken!! rang up Berry BWM near heathrow and asked for a quote on how much this will cost to fix as the dealer I purchased it from was going to reimbused me. Berry took down the info of my car and rang me back about 30 minutes later saying that they spoke with BMW and they were willing to fix it under good will for me for free recognised that springs should last much longer than that. brought it in this morning and it is done and dusted. the handling is so much better and tramlining has reduced significantly (still on runflats...).

maybe give them a try?

how can you check if your springs are broken/cracked? do you need to get the car up on a ramp?

probably can do it via visual inspection, but havent tried myself. I am sure the knowledgable folks here would be able to advise you...

fyi, I've just been diagnosed with two broken rear springs. Since my car is a 2003, there's no sense in even talking to BMW. A flaw like that should have really been recalled.

:voodoo:

One of my springs cracked in town a few weeks ago sending the little pigs tail end of the spring boingboingboinging across the road. Sept '06 Sport, 12k miles, garaged.

BMW would only replace the one spring for me under warranty despite the dealer trying, no loaner (apparently its perfectly ok to drive..... err..so why have springs in the first place???) but I did get a free car wash and the guys at my local dealer David Prentice in Omagh were as helpful and couteous as always, squeezing it in at 8am so I could get underway on a long trip to England that day.

Good luck, hope you can get some sort of contribution
