car in for it's oil service today and they just came back with the following and Im not sure I believe them totally...

'Wishbone bushes are shot and need replacing': £282.33 + VAT
'Front Discs and Pads need replacing, lipped and scored': £302.78 (probably + VAT)
'Rear discs and Pads need replace - as front': £289.62 (probably + VAT)

I apparently have a right rear puncture though I haven't noticed any loss of pressure - warning not gone off or anything... quoted £318 :o

Reason I dont believe them that much - Car was MOT'd in November last year and what with all the snow I have hardly driven it since then. I would have expected some advisory or some such if things are as bad as they are saying :?

Any thoughts... I havent ok'd anything with them yet.

Thanks in advance

i wouldnt believe them for a second. its a typical service trick isnt it. take it to a different garage and get them to have a look at it.

i think they are just chancers hoping you know nothing about maintaing your car

Guess that was a main delaer, seem to remember mine quoted £300 for a rear tyre, must think we were born yesterday :x

One of my wishbone bushes had gone at my MOT. I had noticed a problem - vibration through the steering wheel - and would have got it looked at anyway, suspect you would have done too. IIRC the vibration came on over a couple hundred miles. But the bushes weren't described as "shot". I would have thought you'd have noticed it.

If they have gone, and I'd want a second opinion, these are prices for a 3.0 from Motorsport World (not looked at anyone else, so not saying this is the cheapest you'd get):
EBC Ultimax Discs Front £143.72
EBC Ultimax Pads Front £27.83 (I believe the OEM equivalent)
Prices inc vat!

If they did all need to be done at once, even if it was a little more, I'd go for an upgrade :)

As you said, they normally put an advisory on at MOT time if things don't look right. I'm not sure if they note the depths on the MOT form or whether that's just the BMW visual checks?

If it was me I'd go and pick the car up. Obviously with what's been said I'd drive it very carefully, but definitely take it to someone for a second opinion.

Cheers PawnSacrifice..

Thats just it Ive not noticed anything untoward - the steering is fine doesnt even tramline...

brakes are totally effective with no long travel in the pedal or anything.

second opinion definitely going to be sought :x

Sounds like a load of crap to me.

Discs do get a lip as they wear, that is normal, and they get scored too eventually.

A visual inspection by your self should reveal all on the discs/pads front. Also their quote sounds high. Mine were way cheaper than that when quoted by BMW iirc. You can DIY fronts in an hour easily. I got my consumeables from Euro Car Parts, as per OEM except the rear discs I think, I posted a thread about it with part numbers etc.

Bushes, well they would have been on MOT if they needed doing. Seems expensive too. Does that price include alignment afterwards or something?

BMW taking the pish imho. For servicing great, keep the FSH going if you want, and prices not SO mad, but for these kinds of jobs that don't go down on the book, just use a good independent imho.

If it's in for the Oil Service and you decline getting the work done that they see fit are they still obliged to stamp your book?

Yes. All they are stamping for is an oil service. Those advisories are for items that are not part of the service.

yup already priced up new discs and pads from motorsportworld (thanks pawn) as £290 delivered for EBC standard etc.... then just get my local garage to fit them :D

but first gonna book it in to National Tyres for their free check over as a second opinion.

take the point that I could look at them myself but... I wouldnt know what to look for

Ill drive carefully home tonight then :o

Just PM'd some contact details to you... give him a call, you may get a deal for the lot
(assuming he's not seen this thread already)

Depends what miles you've done but if they are the original disks then they've done OK....replacement price is a bit expensive but if you can't or won't do it yourself (which would be about two thirds cheaper)...?

There are manufacturers guidelines about minimum disk thickness, worth asking how they conform to those?

The bushes take a hammering on the Z. Wouldnt be suprised if they did need doing but its an easy check once its up on a ramp to see how they are.
I paid about 130 to get mine done.

Well I got home safely :D

mileage is 47800, no idea if they are the original discs though...

dreamer - thanks for that

Im gonna take the car to National Tyres for a double check at the weekend.

my bshes came up as an advisory on the last mot and ive felt no change in the car so they havent been done yet- goin in for a brake service and gonna asl bm to look at them but really hoping the price isnt as steep as yours!!
