Edinburgh Questions

So basically I have the general tourist questions, where to go in Edinburgh, what to eat etc. I'm not opposed to meeting some forum folk too.
Me an some mates are heading up over there April 2-4th.
I don't know yet if I'll drive the Z4. Probably not because I'll get to see more if I'm a passenger, plus parking the 3 or so cars (one is a SUV) will be challenging enough.

i went the oter week- the castle is worth a nosey, there were loads of nice places to eat and th royal mile was a great drink!

I've worked and visited too many times to remember - great city. I'll let the locals step and and be your guides, but if nothing forthcoming will point you to a few places.

Where are you staying??

Right, where to start...

I'm not from Edinburgh but I'm close enough - Falkirk where I stay is 25mins on the train away :)

Things to do:
- Edinburgh Castle (very impressive, worth a visit)
- Mary King's Close evening tour (a tour of the old city streets, they built the new buildings over the top of it)
- National Museum of Scotland (I've not been yet but supposed to be good)
- Dymanic Earth (science-type stuff, more suited to kids and young-minded lol)
- St Giles' Catherdral is supposed to be good too
- there's the Royal Yacht Brittania docked down in Leith but it's not really my thing
- take a train from Edinburgh Waverley station (in the middle of the city) across into Fife (e.g. Dunfermline, but it's a dump :poke:), and you'll go over the Forth Rail Bridge :D

Places to eat:
- loads of places but I don't tend to eat out in Edinburgh a lot so can't really advise much!
- I do like International Starters as it's a bit different and the food is awesome

Places to drink:
- this is what Scotland does as a national pasttime :icb:
- the Grassmarket area is packed full of pubs/bars, as is Rose Street (runs parallel to Princes' Street but one street north)

Accomodation - can help with, but if money's no object then you can't beat the Balmoral!

Might be worth posting up in the Scotland section of Pistonheads as you'll get a LOT of info on there: LINKY. I post on there a bit too... Plus you'll get advice on good parking too for your Z4 if you bring it...

(edited to fix a link I fecked up)

you will find more than enough to do for a weekend - we keep going back and always find more to do

all of what a11y has mentioned plus:

Camera obscura is worth a look at - especially if you get a good clearish day :D
go on one of the ghost tours :D any of them will do but go at night

for eating - anywhere really but if you want posh, the Witchery and the Balmoral are hard to beat (but aren't cheap...)

We nearly always stay in the radisson on the royal mile which is nice and central for the old and new town

I think we are staying in Carbury (sp?) castle? or keep, or something not your traditional hotelish

A fine choice of city to visit

If you fancy doing something a bit more energetic, have the time and have some half decent weather, a quick walk up Arthur's Seat (ooeerr) early in the morning will give you some great views over the city, the Firth of Forth and over to North Berwick in the east. It's an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park that, alomg with the adjoining Sailsbury Crags (a prominent volcanic sill) form the backdrop to many views from the city itself.

A jolly wheeze for aviation enthusiasts would be a trip to the National Museum of Flight. Probably a poor relation to many of the ones you have in the States (and maybe even to what you see most days at work). But they've got sme really nice exhibits there and the Concorde exhibition is great.

If you fancy some decent Chinese food in authentic(ish) surroundings, you could do worse than try the New Lee On.

Have a good time :)

Nice Tapas bar in the omni centre next to the playhouse. couple o nice pubs in there as well.

Would second Mary Kings Close, it is fascinating and is a must see . Castle is the obvious one. The Scottish Parliament if you want to see how to waste several millions.
Drinking, as said Rose Street, Grassmarket/Cowgate and George Street (the latter some more pretentious places - cocktails in the Dome are pretty good!).
Omar Khayyam is a damn good Indian in the Haymarket area, can be sure you'll need to book. There's a good Japanese & Chinese place at the top of Lothian Road which used to be good too.
