ECU problems on a Peugeot can anybody explain

When it comes to electronics on cars I am a complete numpty!!!!! I haven't got a clue...
my daughter's 2006 Peugeot 307 hdi won't start it's not the battery or the starter motor it is completely dead recovery guy thinks the ECU unit has failed.
There seems to be lots of ECU units for her model on eBay , but are they plug and play?? Isn't it a lot more involved than just taking the old one out and put in a new one in , isn't there coding involved? any advice would be appreciated
I hate French cars
Oh yes if you bump start the car it starts fine

I have my doubts it's an ECU issue based upon the fact it runs fine if bump started (don't do this repeatedly though as cars with catalytic converters don't like the unburnt fuel in them).

If you are handy with a voltmeter then I'd make sure that the starter is getting 12v when it should be, i.e. during the starting process, maybe the recovery guy already did this?

Back to your original question, I'm pretty sure a new ECU (if eventually required after all) would need coding as the ECU normally holds info relating to the immobiliser & central locking keys etc.

I think I'd be temped to find a good auto electrician or a local pug indi.

Solenoid is probably part of the starter anyway, making sure 12v is getting to the starter terminals is key in this situation, try clobbering the starter with a rubber mallet.

Another item that could be the problem is the ignition switch when you turn it to the starter pos.
A neighbor had a similar issue on a Renault Clio,I reached around the back and made sure the wires were all on tight and it started.

I know it sounds obvious but has he checked the battery .

Immobiliser ?

Peugeot BSI modules are very common for going wrong....

Also 307's can get rotten wiring looms under the bonnet....

That said, you do need to negate the starter motor or wiring to it,inc engine earth..... ECU rarely fail, only water ingress into the plugs or cross poling the battery makes them fail.

Does the engine turn over normally on the key or is it slow. When turning over does it attempt to fire. Could be a dodgy earth somewhere and when bump started, it jolts it into connection

Ok the battery has a good 12 volts took it off put it on another Peugeot it started up straight away
When you turn the key in the ignition there is nothing all the warning lights come on and go out as normal but the car does not even attempt to start or turnover, can hear a relay clicking underneath the bonnet and if you bump start it starts

Have a look at this regarding the the fuse link not a fuse as such

Does sound like your starter motor has died. as has already been said, give it whack with a hammer and see if it starts

You need to measure if the starter is receiving 12volts first before you start bashing anything with a hammer, it could save a lot of unessessary violence :o

Highly unlikely it's the starter. The 307Hdi's have a Mitsubishi starter that is extremely reliable. I know this because just last month i replaced the old Valeo starter on my 205GTi with a 307 Hdi one. Older peugeots with Valeo starters often suffered issues traced back to the starter as the solenoid was extremely sensitive to power. if your battery was even slightly down on power you'd get nothing. You can test the starter by running a live straight to it from the battery. It be amazed if it is the starter though.

As has been said. If it runs when jumped it's doubtful it's the ECU unless it runs like an absolute dog. From what I know of earlier Peugeots the ECUs don't need coded. They are plug and play but you need one from the same model/engine obviously.

Ignition switch would be worth checking. There was a recall on early models for this and other Peugeots are known to have them go over time causing issues similar to yours. Relay clicks but bugger all happening. I also had similar symptoms with a bad earth in a car recently.
