I've read all the write-ups on both EBC pads and have had experience of EBC Greenstuff on a a car a few years ago. However that was a 106 GTi, somewhat lighter and less powerful than the Z4 3.0 which makes me want to tend towards the Redstuff pads since they are recommended for 200+ bhp cars. Nevertheless I don't want to end up with a "race" pad which is great on spirited drives and the track but becomes next to useless on runs around town, motorways etc. I need something that will give me good performance all round really. I know some people have opted for one over the other on the forum and would just like to know what people think and they're personal experiences?

I have RedStuff pads on my car since.... some months now, and i'm very pleased with them.
On the track, they perform very well (at least enough for my skills...) and on the road, despite some squealing, they are very usable. If i were really picky, i'd say that the first two stops you make in the morning, when the pads are cold, are maybe a bit soft. Then it's OK.

As shooter said, RedStuff are excellent provided they arent stone cold. After having Greenstuff on my VX220 when i bought it, i felt very little braking confidence :(

Redstuff is between the Greenstuff (bit better than OEM spec) & Yellowstuff (fast road & track), so should be fine for normal road use with a bit of spirited driving.

I'm going to go for Yellowstuff or ask for a custom job on Bluestuff (if I start doing more trackdays) when I need new pads.

I'd normally use Ferodo (DS2500/DS3000 - expensive) or Pagids (RS19/RS29 - very expensive), but we (motorsport marshals) get a 50% discount from EBC for pads, so have started using them instead, which means a 4-wheel set is about £90 delivered

When I get up there, let me know how to jump in on marshalling :P

Squealing brakes... I hate that, just embarrassing

It is, but those in the know will see your car and assume you track it. My solution is going to be to just get a second set of rotors/pads for the track.

i've been thinking about redstuff, but your 'some squealing' has put me off a bit. how much is some??

I thought the EBC pads came with a rubber membrane on the back to combat squeeks? then there is always copper slip?

Ran EBC Greenstuff pads on my last car never had any squealing at all and very low dust but the braking was nothing to write home about

Just to be contrary I run greenstuff on the Zed and am very pleased. No pretentions to a track car, work from stone cold, no dust and no squeals.

Braking is awesome, but then again I do have larger discs and they are EBS Ultimas :)

Also run them on an X5 for the last 5 years and just fine towing down the Alps with 2 ton of Jeep on the back

I have used Greenstuff before with the EBC rotors and was happy with the initial bite as mentionned above. Very low dust and quiet. Looks kinda neat with the green showing. But 1 track day and the pads will turn black from the heat. Excellent city driving pad. Probably not the right pad for track days.

Well I've added a poll so its easier to see where we are with people's opinions...

How quickly to the redstuff pads heat up and cool down? For example on a long motorway journey would they cause problems in braking should they suddenly be required?

Heat up : approximatelay 1 minute or two stops in town, from "stone cold".
Cool down : absolutely no idea... :D
Sudden brake on the motorway : no problem whatsoever.

My opinion : if you're not going to track the car oftenly (once a year ?) or never at all, go with the GreenStuff. It's ar least as goos as OEM plus they're dustfree.

I think you really need to just think about your use here and read the technical specs on the EBS site. Frankly everyone has vastly different needs and set of compromises they will accept.

Only had experience of red stuff in my old mr2, but didn't really notice any down sides. A lot of people mention that they're not great untill warmed up, but i've found even from cold you can still stop well.

The main advantage is you don't get much/any brake fade, with the standard pads i did.

Green are silent. Some comment that red squeal, usually when cold.

All EBC discs make a noise. Ultimax growl under certain braking conditions and they are supposed to be silent (I have them fitted with EBC green). The others drilled and slotted will be noisier.

Basically anything with grooves will make a noise. Solid are silent. Cross drilled usually silent.
