I actually like it as it sounds somewhat purposeful. Has faded a lot as they have bedded in after 1,000 miles or so of use. Mainly noisy on mid effort braking from say 40mph to 5mph. Say pulling up briskly to lights or a junction.
If you want silence stick to smooth discs, although I do have Brembo cross drilled performance on an X5 and they are silent. Avoid slots.
Ultimax growl is nice and not too loud.
It will be annoying for the first 100 miles or so, as long as the black protective coat is still present. After that, it's just nice.
On my car, it happens on "mid-heavy" braking, but as cj10 says, it sounds purposeful. On regular "city" braking, i hear more squealing from the pads than growl from the discs.

No sale on the rears - the 3.01 are the same as the later 3.0Si so they did not need uprating or changing, other than adding matching EBC discs and pads.
Can't recall what you have on a 2.5 but IIRC the 3.0 is a 294mm?
They shoudl be easy enough to source ont he many breakers in the UK
Yep, 280x10 solid on the rear. Standard setup of the 3.0i is 294x19 vented.
I still don't get why there so much difference in brake setup between 2.5i and 3.0i...
