i had a problem once with direct debit, and essentially i got round it by shutting the bank account.
if she says 'no longer works..' it does indeed imply it was working in her possession at some point, and given that you stipulated no returns i would say you are as good a position as you could get.
i recently sold a desktop computer and a washing machine on e bay (moved house and had a whole raft of items i didn't need, a first time buyer could have decked their gaff out for a song on what i listed) and i stated both listings as 'not working for part only' for the very reason you have found. the trouble with electrical items is you get people who enjoy the saving they make over currys but don't like the risk of buying second hand with no guarantee.

Yep, the charge-back is an enforceable debit, the same as spending on your account then closing it, the debt still stands.
