E89 Start-Stop

I have thinking of buying a 2009 23i.

I have checked some cars on the classifieds that meet my criteria but have not checked any car yet.

My question is if the E89 has the start-stop function.
If so, can it be de-activated?

Yes it does.
Yes it can. Either permanently using some coding gadgetry, or simply by podging the button when you first start up.

Hi, as above the function can be coded out using Carly etc, but i don’t think the 23i came with the function anyway? :?

My mistake sorry. Thought it was a standard E89 thing.

My 30i e89 never had it & i don’t think the 35i/is have it either, seems it’s just us with the 2litre turbo engines!

Another unique feature reserved for the cream of the range? :poke: :D

I saw it listed on some USA autos when I was shopping the E89.

I suspect BMW introduced that feature on cars built after a certain date probably around the time they introduced the N20 engine so I doubt any of the 23i 30i or 35i before this time will have it. I had it in my F20 1 series and found it very annoying and fuel savings weren't noticeable either.

tsk tsk Smartbear..pay attention..when the ZF 8HP45 was revised post initial N20 launch, a stop start variant came out with an accumalator to allow auto start stop operations..

Is start/stop for emissions, gets into certain co bracket for tax purposes.

It helps the city /urban fuel consumption / CO2 figures a lot whcih is why its fitted to all modern IC cars..

It is cited, anecdotally as a contrbuting factor to the N20 cam chaim /oil pump drive chain demises..most engine designs never inagined starting stopping the engines 100,000s of time..the 'jerk' on the chains helps contribute to the chains /tensioners /guides demise..
