E89 roof relay change

+1 for the salmon relay change done today.
As above, for 09 production year they didn't look too bad.

But peace of mind that it's done.
 to Robbiz4 and Smartbear.

Replaced mine on the weekend. The old ones were in good shape considering they are 10 years old, should get another 10 years out of these.
Where did you get them from? I am guessing you fitted OEM not Ebay specials!
My BMW local is closed for the time being....

Cool. Indeed these contacts look better than in the average relay.
But no wonder, your car is only from 2012!

I think it spent a lot of its life in Manchester..an area with high rainfall...so probably the roof was never operated..

I wonder how much contribution motoring the roof with a low battery contributes to induction arcing?
I think low battery operation would have a big impact on arcing because ohms law. :tumbleweed:

 Your roof was down on a sunny day in 2013 and again in 2015  :poke:
Look at the huge difference between your like new contacts and my 2010 relay
That only applies if you are operating the roof with the engine turned off

ParkLane BMW's online spares dept is still open. I've just ordered some. £16.09 each plus £4.99 postage. Might as well get them done now !!

They were off eBay buy from one of the BMW dealership stores.

I got mine direct from BMW,
shop.bmw.co.uk
Still delivering on line orders.
Thank you for the info Mikopop,
I get two different salmon relays appear when I do the search using my VIN as confirmation.
Are both the relays identical or did you buy one of each?
They both have the same part number but diferent PID numbers!!

Confused

Changed mine today.
I was worried when I though they were some different Amp rating but previous comments confirmed these numbers after the date are just manufacturers numbering.

With camera on full magnifcation I couldn't see any real sign of pitting on the lower contact but who knows?
The old ones were marked as being from 2009 so maybe I've been lucky?
New ones ordered from Hubauer in Germany... Super excellent service and I'll be using them again..

thanks Robbi... You've seen a few more old relay contacts than me. My timing to change them was maybe just in time :? ... I didn't open up the other one but I'll check it out later today...

That’s not the lowest contact, go back to page 14 on this thread & look at the top pic

Did this today on my 2013. One less thing to worry about. I did disconnect the battery just to be sure I did not short anything. Just takes an extra minute to do.

You wouldn’t have shorted anything changing the relays, trust me I’ve changed plenty of them on working railway signalling systems
