 Great write-up Rob, :driving:

I've been aware of this for some time and really should have got around to changing mine before, but hey-ho

Ok so I've just ordered a pair of these following a search on eBay for "BMW 1742690" (the part number for the pink relay!), now due to the importance of this relay I chose "New" only and then placed it in Lowest first, and a strange thing happened, the cheapest relay was a genuine one from a BMW dealer!!!!! :o So two relays have just cost me £27.98 with free delivery, and the most expensive ones were a whopping £30.81 each!! So always check your prices, now I may have been able to pay even less if I could be bothered to shop around even more but I thought £13.99 each was a pretty decent price to pay considering.

So again thanks Rob  8)
Good deal on your relays. The are £21.38 EACH here :x

Have you enquired about a discount? I got offered 10% when i asked :?
Rob
I didn't think to ask when buying them.

Thanks to both RobbiZ4 and Smartbear (Rob) for this. I've just changed the Salmon relays on the wife's newly acquired E89 off the back of what I've learn't here. I do have one question though, when reading the links to RobbiZ4 original posts I saw mention of some purple relays on the E85. If I don't changes these on my E85 and they go bad are the consequences the same as with the E89?

Thanks

In general YES, the E85 (as well as other models documented in my principle relay post) has the same kind of electrical circuit for these two relays and a comparable risk to get the hydraulic pump damaged, if a contact welds in any of these two relays.
BUT, the power consumption of the E85 hydraulic pump is much lower compared to the E89 pump. That means, the probability of this fault is given, but the time period when it might happen is much longer.

My recommendation
Yes, change the purple relays as well after 15 years for about 30 Euros, feel happy and you are safe for the next 15 years. :D
No, don't care about it, as until now I did not hear about a damaged E85 hydraulic pump caused by these purple relays.

Thanks Robbi

Got my relays yesterday from Synter’s and will change them very soon......it just occurred to me that it was September last year since I had the roof down last so getting nervous about pressing the button for the first time in 5 months 😯

Relays changed and happy to say roof all good after a 5 month stint in the up position. I took the relays apart and the contacts badly pitted and signs of carbon deposits/residue in the casing and this in a 7yr old 38k car. Really glad I took the advice on this forum and got the relays changed👍

"Big Thank You" to Smartbear and RobbiZ4,
I have just ordered a pair of Salmon relays from ebay and they are about GBP20 each including shipping. I believe I can change them myself as the pictures Smartbear and the video RobbiZ4 have shown very clearly. I don't think the previous owners have them changed as most people here don't have the mindset about pre-caution.
I am also thinking changing the microswitches as RobbiZ4 mentioned but I am still haven't got the confidence to do it myself.
Anyway, thanks again and still enjoying the ownership of this '09 35i for the 8th month.

Just ordered replacements from Cooper BMW in Norwich, £16.09 each inc vat and free delivery to my address. Prompt response and excellent service.

Thanks for this heads up. I ordered a pair of new relays from my local dealer (£25) and they arrived the next day. Replaced this weekend during a brief respire in the weather.

Replaced mine today, was surprised they didn’t look worse for them being over ten years old. Worth the peace of mind
