e89 roof problem

Are they are SMT (surface mount resistors), tiny squares on the board maybe?

How can an SMT equal a surface mounted resistor?
Surely (and I am thinking logically here not technically) an SMT is a surface mounted transistor, an SMD is a surface mounted diode and an SMR is a surface mounted resistor!
As I said earlier, I am genuinely interested but so far am hitting a brick wall :thumbsup:

Will post a pic of mine soon. Still on a bar trip... :rofl:
Maybe Germany get much better switches than we do in the UK. I blame Brexit :D

SMT means surface mount technology as opposed to pin and hole

.. and SMD is Surface Mounted Device! Not Diode.

SMD is a generalization for all parts.

See I told you I wasn't technical :D

Anyway, where are these resistors? :D

Nope, no resistorsIMG_8297.JPGIMG_8296.JPGIMG_8295.JPG
Here it is.

Before BREXIT:

  • 5620 => 562 ohms times 10 exp 0 = 562 ohms
  • 2211 => 221 ohms times 10 exp 1 = 2210 ohms

After BREXIT:

:rofl:

The microswitch coupling lock:

Ok, so the German (eu) switches are different to ours, I think we've now established that.

This now poses another question; why? Or did they install resistors after a certain date?

These SMD's are a substantial part of all roof microswitches, it doesn't work without it.
Just have a look on your floor or in the garbage of the cut housing.

The solder is still there so really odd that the centre pieces are missing :?

Same thought.
As the whole block was potted, both resistors were cut out while opening. That can happen very easily.

Not "yet" had a problem with these switches in 12 years, but soon after acquiring the car, i liberally sprayed all the switches and mechanism with some silicone spay.
Is the green part of the switch hard or a rubber boot?

They are quite brittle so will have come off with the resin seems the only option

I would NOT recommend this!

The main problem of these faulty components are cracks in the housings. That will happen regardless what you try to "improve" with any spray. But most sprays will destroy more than expected (i.e. WD40).

Yes, the green parts are rubbers boots.

I have another one, so now i'm going to have to rip that one apart (more carefully admittedly) to see.
Maybe that's why I had to change them? :lol: :lol:
