E89 Market watch

With all due respect an E89 Msport HAS to be white, there is no other colour. All these other pretences are just wrong; custard, blood, brown or blue. You know they are wrong.

Pondrew (boring alpine white E89. Colour code 300 FYI)

With all due respect for me any car has to be a colour - and white isn't a colour. :P

White E85/86s were rare for a reason, but E89 buyers seemed to lack taste/imagination!

The reason for that is very simple, in the time of the E85 / E86 nobody wanted white, dealers wouldn't touch a white car with a barge pole then all of a sudden white started to take off hence why you see more white E89s. I am actually surprised white has stayed popular for as long as it has. Colours do come and go with fashion, I remember a time not too long ago when 90% of Mercs on the stealers forecourt were all silver!

I don't think a yellow Z4 is worth anymore than other colours if anything most dealers will see it being a marmite colour and harder to sell so worth less.

Many buyers, myself included would have definitely gone for the Atacama Yellow. The only thing that stopped me at the time was, they were only available for the 1st Gen E89s and every one seen lacked the iDrive. As you say, marmite. I love Marmite 8).

True some will go for it but they aren't worth more than other colours.

I think yellow and orange are the best colours and pretty rare so will sell quicker or at a higher price depending on how quickly you want to shift the car.

Not many peopler worried about toys, most will tell you heated seats are the only real thing they want, everything else is a bonus.

Maybe yellow is rare because it wasn't popular with new car buyers? From my years in the car trade buying and selling cars I can tell you spec and colour are the most important things to affect a car's desirability, especially prestige / premium brands. Spec is particularly important on German cars where everything was an option. As outdated as what some people think the iDrive is, a car with it will still be more sought after than one without and most people still prefer a car to have more toys then not, it's desirability is way higher then a car with no toys no matter what the colour and this is reflected in used car prices. When it comes to colours the safe colour (maybe boring colours to some) will always have a larger market appeal and hence better resale then colours that appeal to a smaller market such as yellow green gold etc. No matter how rare yellow gold green might be they aren't going to be worth more than the same car with the same spec in another colour.

Colours are fickle...people are dribbling over the orange versions now

More than half of the M40i’s for sale on BMW’s AUC site this weeks were Orange and they don’t seem to be shifting at all but Grey and blue are selling very quickly but as you say the VO E89’s are well sought after.

People as well as colours are fickle

Different colours suit different cars better, hence why VO works well on the E89 and has better demand compared to VO on the 1 series. Personally I think for the F20 1 series Melbourne Red suits it really well and that is what I chose for my F20 when I had it, but even so it's less in demand or popular compared to a F20 in grey or blue e.g.

In that case nor is black, or grey. Therefore the majority of cars on the road are not a colour :poke:

The designers of the BMW sales brochures seem to choose the most photogenic colour combo in my opinion.

A couple of thoughts..again IMHO..well four actually..

I think the frozen colours will date badly, bit like those old bathroom suites from the 60s/70s in green/purple/blue etc

The technical difficulty in keeping them looking matt but new will make them look tacky/tatty over time...you can't machine polish them back!

On the yellow/orange/even white, the change in preferences over time may have been affected by people re-furbishing / replacing OE wheels with black/grey versions and other mods like black roofs/valances..IMHO those colours needs a non bright alloy look wheel to offset the strong colours.

Also now that the E89 is for most an affordable toy..many people are looking for something that stands out as a toy not as an attempt at a 'fast cruiser / alternative business car' so strong colours swing back more with those buyers..again I've been looking for a decent yellow one and there were several a couple of years ago at reasonable prices but both numbers and prices (for those fully spec'd) seem to have changed.

Again, for me the iDrive to echo silverstar is a must, its not just an older sat nav its the primary user interface to all the other systems, so yes there are higher res screens/ more advanced mapping solutioons but it was the transistion car from the pure analogue E85 to the wholly digital G29.

This! Many people say the iDrive in our E89s is outdated but as you pointed out that only refers to the navigation and screen resolution but I have used the navigation many times and it's worked perfectly well, sure screen resolution isn't great but it's better then no screen at all. I have added a MMI box to mine which gives me wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto so I can now run any navigation solution I want and it brings the iDrive bang up to date (well apart from the resolution). On top of that you get the other interface for the PDC, tyre pressures, car settings etc.

Does the MMI box change screen resolution?

Cany you ensure if you have a high end audio option that the USB/audio does not route through the MMI (except car play)..a few friends have fitted chinese android head units and most the audio quality is down on the OE unit..maybe more functions but not better audio!

I think I already mentioned that, can't do nothing about the resolution! The audio only routes via the Aux when using the MMI box when you use it for CarPlay or Android Auto, when you use the BMW interface it does not route via the Aux. In my case I have the basic 6 speaker setup but I upgraded it at the same time as fitting the MMi box and have to say the audio quality from the box is great and sounds way better then listening to the radio via the BMW interface. I have a thread on the setup here:

I haven't got a problem with the Sat Nav at all. Seems to work fine. I s'pose if you have a newer car then it might seem a bit outdated. I don't.

Atacama yellow Z4 are rare beasts. Think they stopped making them circa 2012. If there was a 2015/16 35is model out there I would definitely pay over the odds to get my hands on it.

Have you considered having the existing car wrapped?

Considered and rejected. Imagine waking up on a Monday morning for drive into work with an Atacama yellow Zed with an Orange full leather interior? :dizzy:
