E89 M-Sports in an E85/E86

Lovely job. Funny that the mounting points for the E89 are narrower than the E85; I'd have assumed the exact opposite!

It's either that the Germans were lazy or budget constraints. They took the seat base and rails from an E46 and put on a different back so it would fit in an E85. The leather seat base you actually sit on is 48cm wide on the E89 and 51cm on the E85/6.

All Pictures are of the E85/6 seat base

The reason for the extra width is purely for the seat belt mounting point as this is on the rail of the E85 but for the E89 they put it on the seat base.

Everything is tucked under nicely on the other side

The controls on the side of the E85 seat are really bulked out as the metal levers for moving the seat are tucked under the seat base

The wider piece under the seat bracket looks great , it makes it look a lot neater/cleaner in appearance .

Brilliant job and excellent detailed instructions. Very impressed!
Maybe thread should be moved to the 'how-to' section to save it getting lost over time?

Thanks

When all the finer details are done I'll rewrite and put it in the how-to section

Still need to sort the passenger seat occupancy sensor for facelift cars. Maybe one day someone will fit a set or I'll find a facelift car I can try the passenger seat in.

I think it doesn't look too bad and in a black interior it will hardly be noticeable when painted. Also there could be an option of sourcing carpet from a breaker and trimming on top of it. With some nut cover caps as well it would quite good.

Thank you for following up in this post. I don't recall seeing you discuss any height or leg room differences. The back of the E89 seats look a bit thicker. Any comments for a guy that's about as big as a Z4 can handle?

How tall is tall? 6'4" must be getting on for the limits of normal seats in a Z4?

Right I'm 6'1" and 200 pounds (15 stone.)

I made an initial comment that you wouldn't want to any taller than me however when adjusting the seat I forgot to use the tilt where you raise the front of the seat base and the back of it lowers. I'm used to electric seats.

So with the seat tilted there is more leg room. I used to have the seat all the way back and tilted as low as it can go with standard normal seats and these e89 seats seem about the same. There is a little less room as the back is thicker. It depends on the position of the back.

I don't fit in e85 M-Sports which is why I tried the e89 seats. My back and hips are too wide. Quite disappointing as I spent ages trying to find some

Updates:

Measurements for the drill holes in the plates. The plate needs to be 46.5cm long & 7.8cm wide. The holes are 12mm. Remember to do a plate one way and flip over to do the second plate the other way so you have a left and right hand plate.
Look at pictures on page 2 for countersink position, you will need a 20.5 hss countersink. Not enjoyable to do and a pillar drill helps a lot!

Top work Rob seriously, lots of research and excellent metal work.

Personally I'm going for this as my M is a weekend car and I'm happy to use the seats from my 35i which is used far more now so I'm putting M135 seats in that as there's room for better seats in a more used car. :driving:
