E89 Android iDrive Screen Group Buy - NOW CLOSED

I'm looking into how to best "slightly pack" the camera, I do have some options so I now need to check these out.

Here are a couple of options for the number (license) plate cameras...

The light one is that bad of a fit? :(
No it's not a good fit at all. I've currently placed a piece of plastic just to pack it out and it holds but I'm sure it won't hold for long. So I'm going to look and see if I can manufacture something that will pack it out properly and hold it firm.

I did actually consider the number plate surround (Euro plate version) but then I would have had to make a hole somewhere and this lamp holder version popped up stating that it was for the e89 so gave it a shot.

Hi Dave. Did you get anywhere with the packing? I've got the camera, but don't think i'm going to bother fitting it if it isn't up to the job. Cheers. Pav.

Pav,
I've still not found a way of 100% fitting it perfectly and I'm currently having issues with reliability of the camera, I'm not sure if it's the camera or a connection issue yet though.

The black connector is the power (+ & -) and the 2 canbus lines, you won't be using this one again. The plug should just pull apart.
The pink(violet) plug is your picture line. There should be a tab to press, I've not taken one apart before but it should be there.

spot on Dave. putting a small screwdriver in the tab got it out. the back ones comes off after a bit more pulling.

is there a knack for getting the closing ring to open on the new main loom plug that goes into the back of the stereo? thx

No, to be honest I snapped the tab on mine but it locks back in anyway. So I'm not sure if there us a proper way but I couldn't work it out, and the OEM one doesn't have a locking tab like it.

so it's been a very productive day. all i can say is if i can do it anybody can.

I've got the screen working. i've also realised i don't need Apple Carplay as i can install spotify, tunein and waze directly onto the android unit.

I'm still deciding if i can be bothered to add DAB since i can listen through tunein. i've got it working using the USB unit i linked to early. You also need to install an android app called DAB-Z. not sure i can be bothered with the hassle to routing the aerial.

Final challenge is getting the phone cradle out. I've already managed to break it, but not that fussed as i don't use it.

Yeah my thoughts as well. I'm now not using the dongle at all, although I got it for my wife it's more of a dad to mess with. Don't get me wrong it's a great display and app once it's up and running, but I'm Android anyway so use Android Auto (AutoMate). DAB is only there if you are not in a good phone reception area but then you need to be in a DAB area as well.

As for getting that cradle out, do a search on here to see if anyone has done it (I believe they have)

I'm struggling to get the aux cable to the armrest as i have a white block (maybe part of the phone adapter) under the tray, which is making it difficult to route the cable. i'm going to try and find a wire hanger to use as a guide for the cable.

i'm also not sure if i want to drill a hole in the base under the tray.

Morning Pav,
You may not have to drill a hole if you feed it all the way to the back then through the back of the armrest lid.
Here's the how to I did for replacing the stereo with how to take the console out....

That may be an option, otherwise you really need to drill a hole and then just slice a small hole in the rubber mat.
The attached photo, apart from showing my old Tune2Air, shows my previous aux cable install and I think does a nice tudy unnoticed job.

Hi Dave,

I can't believe I never spotted this... "Optional Apple Carplay (built in, no dongle required) = $90".

Do you know if they can add it to my unit with just a software update?

Thx
