E89 35is - BOUGHT ONE! :D

Hi All,

Back in the day 2014 i had a manual 18i VO E89 with that very orange and alcantara interior to go with it that used to give me a wedgy on long journeys. Looks great though!

I have an itch for an e89 35is now, are there any forum members who are potentially looking to sell and would want to drop some info below, i had a look back through 5 pages of topics and can’t see any.

Given that there aren’t a lot of them for sale I am fairly open on the spec to keep my options open. 0 - 40k miles maximum really, and preferably less the better.

Thanks Everyone,
Matt

Hi Rob,

I have indeed, spent far too long reading pretty far back hence the 4am post  from what i saw I don’t think there were any for sale

There was this black one on Auto trader but i messaged and he has sold it
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103150163586

If anyone sees any online or has one they are thinking about selling please do let me know.

Are there other places these pop up other than pistonheads and A/T?

Many thanks
Matt

OP just buy a 35i for a few thousand pounds less and then remap it to 360-400bhp - more power than a 35iS and basically the same car :D

Nanu, yes it’s nice to see some modern classics starting to come through

Thanks Kevin, tbh i’m not that fussed about the the 35i being slower but the 35is seems the better car to keep. If i don’t find an 35is i might settle for a 35i but i’m in no rush.

I see this ones been on Auto trader since October... I see it doesn't have heated seats or the idrive. Is this being avoided because of the low budget spec and it looks like it needs a bit of tlc or am I missing something else? Auto trader reckon it should be listed at 14k as the recommended list price when you put the number plate and miles in yourself, would it be a bad purchase?

Thanks,
Matt

Hello and welcome, you’ve outlined the reasons why that’s been sitting there since October, no heated seats, no iDrive and strongly priced for a 10 plate.

35iS’s with low/lower spec don’t sell well and won’t resell well. The stereo is probably a lower spec and may require bit of money to get to a decent standard £500+ if you can do it yourself. No heated seats for me would be an absolute no as it limits all year round use. I was out in mine in shorts in the winter

When I upgraded to a 35iS I wanted all of the toys on mine if I was spending that sort of money. To the best of my knowledge the only thing mine doesn’t have is a heated steering wheel and if it’s missing anything other than that I’ve neither noticed nor missed it.

EDIT: mine doesn’t have

S5AC High-Beam Assistant
S524 Adaptive Headlights

But as said I haven’t missed them

Hi Matt,
I'm sure plenty of folk will say save a few quid an get a 35i and to be fair there isn't that much difference. I was in the same position as you last Sepember, it had to be the 35is and after scouring the usual sites I picked one up from the Z4 group on facebook. The one you're looking at on autotrader has been around for a while due to desireabilty of the optional extras such as IDrive, heated seats / steering wheel and others with uprated HIFI. As soon as you have these extras the car sells very quickly. Sure the blue one is a nice car and will give you pleasure, just dont expect to sell it as easy if you are prepared not to have what most see as essentials on a top of the range model. My advice is to keep your eyes on the market and act quickly when the right one turns up with the desireable extras

Edit - what Andy's just said

Where you getting deja vue when you read my post

Hope all is well bud and you’re still enjoying yours :driving:

Hi Andy,

Yes, great minds and all that

Best car I've ever owned, absolutely the right decision and excellent advice back then, our similar responses just goes to show I learned and now preaching the same advice.

You just tought me something new though, I thought all cars with heated seats came with heated steering wheel.

I'm more of a browser than a contributer usually.

Thanks for the comments guys, i agree heated seats in a convertible is a must really, truth be told I've just come out of a convertible AWD F type R, I'm already missing it but the depreciation on it was a lot and i had it a while. Sure it was a great car but in all honesty once you’ve lived with it for a bit it didn’t bring me twice the joy my z4 did but is twice the price. I reckon that’s going to be a pretty sweet middle ground, you guys are in the right cars honestly.

I saw on a topic posted earlier on in here that somebody managed to look up the full spec list of a car, do i have to have the VIN for that or can anyone tell me how to do it/link a forum post on it?

Many thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt, depends what you are willing to pay for a 35is. There are cars out there but it seems the price is fluctuating at the moment.
Just bide your time and see what comes up. I think most on here with a 35is are happy with them. I am with mine.

Matt, I had a site that would give you the VIN from reg number which was working until about 10 days ago but it’s no longer working so I think you’d need the full VIN to get the spec sheet now.

Ha typical! Main reason i ask is to know on auto trader when they have the upgraded sound system. Can you only tell from the spec sheet or are there tell tales in pictures?

For the idrive, is this literally the name for having the screen?

I might see if there is any movement on this one, its a bit pricey what do you think?

Mine has the top of the range media/stereo system. One difference is the number of speakers so visually there’s extra speakers behind the seats. The one with the Alacantara and yellow box showing additional speaker is my current one and the plain one with the red box showing no speaker is from my 23i (base stereo) and as someone who likes music a very poor sound all round. As previously mentioned this can be upgraded if you have the time and skills for approx £500ish The one you’ve linked has no additional speakers behind the seats :|

IDrive is the screen but it gives more functionality than just the screen and you can add an MMI box to give current functionality like Apple Car Play and Android equivalent, Spotify etc. Plenty of threads on here if you’re interested just search and they’ll appear

Possibly a touch pricey but if not top spec’d yes, pricey IMO

Spot on! Just what I wanted to know, thank you very very much for your help. I’ll keep the forum posted if i buy one and have email notifications turned on if anyone comments to contact me with one for sale :driving:

The presence/absence of the top speaker between the seats is a useful quick indicator (ringed red below).

The highest audio option has a speaker there, the middle does not (but does have additional behind the seats as per previous comments), the lowest has neither.

There you go, a more detailed answer than mine and I’ve learnt something too
