Hi again I should have added this to my original post.
I also have a oil leak into one of my spark plugs and need a new rocker box cover can anyone enlighten me to the costs involved main dealer vs independent thanks everyone.

My local dealer did the rocker cover gasket for just under £500 a few weeks ago. Didn't get a quote from an Indy because their lead times were all too long for me.

Thanks for your reply my quote was £770 for the new rocker box cover with the gasket built in and all genuine parts.
I wonder what the main dealer would charge. Rich

I think the cover itself only costs around £150 and wouldn't require any extra labour, so it sounds like you've found an expensive garage! I would get a few more quotes if I were you.

Love to know where you can get a genuine BMW cam box cover from for £150?

Please advise

It was not intended as a put down, but trying to assist the OP that maybe the price being charged wasn't as extorniate as he might have been led to believe..no offence intended..

I've just imported one from the US to reduce costs hence my suprise..

Now then now then :D well while we're at it I wonder how much the rocker box cover cost from BMW in the UK. I think it has the gasket built in but not sure on that

£391..but you do get a gasket, I think

You dont need to change the cover just because your gasket is leaking!
The cover only requires changing if the inbuilt breather system is blocked and to be honest you could probably wash that out and clear it with petrol or similar solvent.
Also clean the PCV valve

High Mark thanks for that. I think you're right. A BMW senior technician said nine times out of 10 you can just change the gasket, Which is what I'm having done.
A general mechanic told me if the cover is warped you need to replace it. We're not talking cylinder heads here, so can't see how plast can be warped and not pulled back down again when you re torque up the bolts. Yes totally agree with you the crack case ventilation built in can be cleaned.

The plastic does warp and leak unfortunately, its the same with the DCT gearbox sumps. I had to change a valave cover on my previous car (23i). We removed it when the gasket went and when it was cleaned and placed on a flat surface it rocked around due to a twist in it.
I think its essential to only remove these parts when the engine is nice and cold. If you removed the cover warm it may well warp as it cools down..
