E89 35i remap

Does anyone have any experience of an engine remap on E89 35i's? (Apologies if this has been discussed in another thread, I could only find general discussion about remapping.)
Is it worth it in terms of extra BHP, does it affect reliability and will it invalidate warranty?

I'm told that if it's done right by the right person I can expect up to an extra 70BHP and a better power band. Is this realistic?

All thought and experiences welcomed.

Thanks

Mart

Superbow had it done

You can have a look into n54tech.com for all kinds of motor tuning for your 35i, the motor in E9x series is all the same as in your car, the n54.

Without further measures (just a new ecu map), you can easily reach 380 bhp. With empty downpipes, a front mounted intercooler and individual maps, 430 bhp are possible. With bigger turbos, high octane fuel or e85, go for > 500 bhp.

The biggest tuning advantage to me is the more constant torque behavior. Look for "cobb accessport" as a good start.

Please do not forget that your car might lose road homologation or at least impair your car's emission values, e.g. if you alter the exhaust system.

Btw, back to your questions:

You WILL lose warranty on motor and gearshift (and bmw is perfectly able to see if you have ever remapped your car, nothing you can really do about it).

Each tuning IS an additional issue for your car's reliability.

But, in my opinion, a good tuning is worthwhile, in particular for a better power band.

Hi MSH

Try and search for

Dinan
JB4
ESS
Procede V5

*EDIT*
I believe there's also a tune called COBB.

I think all of them are american, but the ESS was developed and tested in Norway, which I think is good for those of us using our cars in colder tempratures.

Am sure the higher failure rates from ECU remap's are simply down to more 'excessive testing' from their owners.

I had it done but I live in North America, Dinan stage II, an extra 78 hp and a whole lot of torque and still warrantied. Dinan is sold and installed by the BMW dealer here in town. An excellent way to get it up to 395hp and 425 torque. Quite common here, not so sure about who does it in the UK and if they have any warranty? Here, the drivetrain is covered by Dinan and the rest of the warranty is still BMW with no arguments. Audi has a deal with STASIS for the same type of thing here. Dinan has thre levels Stage 1, II and III. Stage III requires installing a Dinan oil cooler and a few other bits but it gets you 425 hp, Stage II is just software if you have the BMW sport oilcooler and gives you about 390-395hp, Stage I is software and less hp gain . Priced accordingly as to HP gain....

The E89 with something close to 390 hp is an incredible beast

Thanks for the info guys.

If I'm going to up the power/torque so much would it be wise to upgrade the suspension or will stock equipment handle that much oomph ok?

the m suspension would be better to have...or just remember you cant turn quite as well as a 400hp supercar, preferably before you're half way into a very high speed corner...

I've got the M Sport adaptive suspension so I guess it's down to my driving ability now :driving:
Don't worry, I'll let you all know when I'm on the road so you can steer clear :)

JB4 is pretty easy, the learned map is pretty impressive (gives slightly more than the high performance map after a few weeks learning).

Easy to install, easy to remove. Done this on a friends 335i

I had mine remapped early last year. I wouldn't recommend it as it can't put the extra power down without changing the rear diff. Even with the road dry and the sport+ engaged it suffers with the traction lights going mad and cutting the engine. I had the rear diff changed to a Quaife LSD by Bird BMW and this totally solved the problem.
