E89 20i - Hill Assist

Yes it is wrong that they haven't updated the website yet and that it wasn't checked in the first place.
But is anyone really surprised that the Hill Assist has been removed not so long ago even a clock was extra in a base engined BMW. It all stinks of standard BMW Marketing and extracting the most money possible.
 
That brochure disclaimer is a wimp out! I mean, the brochure must be printed for the UK market, so a brand such as BMW should put the resources in to check it is correct!

What next, a manual roof?

I can understand them not offering it as a way of giving more features to a higher spec car, or to save money etc, but thats not what people are complaining about, the issue is that ALL the advertising material clearly states the car has it, when in fact it turns out its never had it. Thats just mis-selling. How much of an issue it is will very for each individual, but the underlying principal is the same.

However, if the brochure is correct in that it shows German cars, then presumably that means that in Germany you can buy a 2.0i which will come with hill start. Therefore it is technically possible.

So, unfortunately, it looks more like a cost issue....but even that is ok if they offer it as an option! But to say its standard and then leave it off is naughty!
 
Out of interest though, are the brochures UK specific? I'm not entirely sure they are. When I test drove the Zed the salesman gave me a 35i brochure :o The Zeds in the brochure looked to be German spec, I'm sure it says somewhere in the brochure that specifications may vary, so it could be just that UK cars dont have hill assist but no reference is made in the brochure :?

I doubt the German sDrive20i has hill start assist. I couldn't find any mention of hill assist in the German Catalog (2011) or March 2012 Pricelist. I'm far from fluent in German though.

I also checked the American and Australian brochures. Both of those show it only on the 35i and 35is.


BMW got it wrong everywhere in the UK, not just on the brochure. I found it wrong on the handout they gave to the press during launch events. That means any press reviews were wrong. We may never get to see it, but I'm sure the internal documentation sent to dealers is wrong too.

But yeah, that disclaimer says they can change anything at all.

The disclaimer should not apply in our case. I "contacted my dealer for precise information " and have a month-old email from our Dealer confirming our call will have hill start assist.

Disclaimer should not affect Statutory Rights of a consumer either.

My disclaimer --- I'm not a lawyer and have a poor understanding of UK law.
 
So its basically not available on a 2.0i anywhere, just that they've cocked up the spec lists.

They have no excuse for not updating the website though - now we know BMW UK know of the problem.
 
That is my understanding of UK consumer law. We can reject something as "Not as Advertised" or "Unfit for purpose"


If you are thinking about rejecting the car, contact an expert (not me) for informed advice.

after giving the chance to the supplier to put things right, in one way or another! you probably have to reach an agreement on some basis as I know someone bought an X1 with navigation and was told it will have full bluetooth (which wasn't the case)! he could have returned the car and wait for another one to be done or let them retrofit it (which they did), but in your case, the next 20i won't have hill hold assist either!!! get them to give you the sDrive35 to keep you satisfied ;)
 
Personally I had interpreted the UK consumer law to be on our side. I know they carry a disclaimer on the brochure however the sales act has a piece whereby they disclaimers don't effect our rights to turn the cars down.
 
Trouble is, unless having hill start was an essential feature for you, then turning the car down due to its absence is a bit harsh.

For me, I never really thought about it, just saw it on the specs and thought it would be nice.

So I wouldn't reject the car due to that. However, lets assume they wrongly listed the rear PDC sensors...that would be an issue for me (as I am a pussy at parking!!) and I would have to take that further (i.e. get them to retrofit at their expense).

But Keith, I reckon you should reject your car. You know it makes sense. I should get mine before you then!!!!

So the question is what to do? If hill start is not available on the 2.0i, rejecting it would leave you with the option of ordering another that would still not have it, cancel the deal completely and not have a Z4 or order a larger engine where it is included, so the options aren't favourable.

Is it possible to retrofit? That would be the best solution. Other than that, its fight for money off or freebe's etc cos you bought a car with "x" feature, but you aren't getting "x" feature.
 
I think the issue for me is I go up Dundas street, the mound, cannon mills area in Edinburgh, even my parents house is on a hill.

Oh for the love of hills!

I've never had it before, and learning the electronic brake is going to be new to me anyway, so this will just add to that learning curve. Presumably its not impossible without hill start?

If you have a lot of hills and this feature was important to you, then I'd make it clear that it is important.

I'm really hoping that in real life its not really an issue - i.e. we all learn to get around it. I know we shouldn't have to, and I'm not poo-pooing the situation, but I reckon after a few weeks driving it, we'll all get used to it.

Free winter wheels....now thats got me thinking!!!!!
 
How much is it actually worth? i.e. generally on other cars, is it on the options list, and what sort of price would it be?

Is it something that is retro-fittable anyway? The guy that got a replacement auto makes that sound unfeasable.

Keith - did your 1'er have it? Don't think ours do, never noticed...have to test it I guess!
 
The new F20 1 series 5-doors do have it. Or at least the brochure says they do. :roll:

You may be right about the old 1 series that BMW do not build anymore.

The 1 series has a mechanical hand brake. That makes all the difference to me.
 
No, my 1 series did not have this feature fitted which is why I was looking forward to having it in the Z4.
