E89 20i - Hill Assist

As I've said before, the importance of this will vary for each individual.

GSM bought his car believing it had it, in fact it being present was a requirement. After trying to get on without it, he couldn't, so pushed for a solution.

At the moment, myself and Keith dont have the cars, so can't actually make an informed decision as to wether it not being included its a real problem. After driving the car for a while and getting used to the EPB, we will know if the hill start really is necessary.

At the moment, I'm just annoyed at the principle of it. Having Hill Start wasn't on my list of high priorities, so I can't at this moment justify cancelling the order.

I know perfectly how to do a hill start, but as I've said before, the EPB might alter that, and that is what I need time to get used to.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon though, in a hypocritical way, cos if compensation is available, then I'll have something towards winter wheels, because, disclaimer or not, they wont have delivered what they were paid to deliver.

You go girl! :)

BMW have updated the UK website. While it is still dated 1st July 2011, hill start assist is no longer shown as standard on the 20i. They've also removed the (2011) from the sDrive20i and sDrive28i.

Hill Start Assistant is still shown as standard for the sDrive28i

============================================

BMW may have someone lurking in this thread.

I know they were watching an X3 thread back when the US models had serious problems with the automatic transmission.

Do we know anyone with a 28i here that states they have no hill start assist? Perhaps it is just the 20i its not on? Another reason to justify the 4K difference in price when really its just different injectors and more boost on the 28i?

it's not on the 28i on the spec list now! and as Keith mentioned only comes with 35i models!

They're obviously updating it all right now... I wonder if anything else 'dropped off' the spec?

Wonder if they've updated it due to the week 10 updates? Just checked the spec and nothing else stands out as missing, but then it would be easy to miss things.

They might add that the top can be raised and lowered at speeds up to 25mph. That feature is in the new German brochure.

I wonder if the UK website updates are being done by someone in Germany . They got off to an early start this morning and Germany is one hour ahead of the UK.

It is possible they had an update scheduled to coincide with the week 10 updates. Depending on work schedules, other projects, meetings, approvals and who knows what, they decided to wait and make the changes all at once.

There could be website changes to other models as well. For example F20 5-door M-Sport production started with week 10.

The US owners manual index says Brake Assist -- See Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)

Under DBC it says:

Chiquita.

Wait, no it doesn't.

It says
When you apply the brakes rapidly, this system automatically produces the maximum braking force boost.

Just checked through all my vehicle order contract etc (been saying I'd do it for a few days, so today bought it to work!!!). No mention of Hill Start assist, then then nothing about DSC etc, so obviously not part of that document. Nothing in the Z4 price list (from Sept 2011) brochure either, but it is in the Z4 brochure.

I suppose we need to wait till they've finished the website, cos when I looked it didn't say anything about opening top while moving, but still said July 2011, so maybe they havent finished updating it yet.

Hi!

Nice to meet you all, I am new on this forum and have just ordered a 20i Msport! I was patiently waiting for it to arrive and been lurking around this forum reading about the car etc.. when I came across this thread a couple of days ago. In short, the car is for my other half who will use it daily for work etc.. so the hill assist was a bit of a must and a consideration when we ordered it.

I have an EPB in my Audi A6 which doesn't have hill assist of any kind and is a manual shift. In the A6 if you engage the handbrake then pull away it releases it automatically which I understood the Z4 would not do. We live in a very hilly part of Yorkshire and her commute involves queuing in traffic on steep hills and parking for our house is the same. Without hill assist and an EPB that from what I understand requires your foot on the brake to release it, leaves you in a position of needing nothing short of perfect clutch control to avoid bumping things. (particularly where we park as people tend to sit very closely together). Needless to say she has always achieved the control by holding the handbrake as most people do and is not completely put off wanting the car. (the test drive was an auto but we wanted the manual box)

So I contacted the dealership who initially gave the "yes its definitely fitted.." until I asked them for conformation from BMW who indeed confirmed it was 3 litre models only. The dealership have been very apologetic about the situation but can offer nothing other than a cancellation of the order and refund of my deposit. It cannot be after fitted as has already been mentioned here. This is a real blow as the car was due next week :(

I really don't want to cancel the car but I cannot get something she won't feel comfortable driving! The only option I have is to consider getting it with the auto box that I can see, but unless BMW are stumping up the cost or giving a sizeable discount on having the order rebuilt with this fitted I think we are stumped. (cannot afford the 3.0 models :( )

To add, if it was only for me I would wear not having it on the car and live with it. But its not me using it everyday. Hoping we can come to some sort of compromise over the auto....

Just been out today and decided not to use the hill assist and try the EPB, no real problems to report its just like it used to be with a hand brake, gentle revs lift the clutch till bite point and depress the EBD, no fuss & warning light.

Yes driving is easier with hill assist but as I have said previously it makes you lazy and there really isn't much worse than sitting behind someone when it's dark with their 3rd brake light glaring at you at the lights.

That sounds effectively like GSM who got given an Automatic.

Do you need to keep the brake pedal pressed in order to release the EPB? See Sars post...

If it works like that, then I don't see any real problem, but the previous poster said you need the brake pedal down to release the EPB. However, as you've actually got your car and have tried it, obviously you know! So I'm happy with that, and in real life it shouldn't be an issue.

don't know if this answers your questions Kevin or not, but while parked on my drive, tried to release the EPB without holding the brake, it started pinging at me and showing to hold the brake pedal first then you can release it. I prefer the system Audi uses with their EPB.
