E89 20i - Hill Assist

What year is the OPs car? Did they change the spec at some point?

edit: just re-read 1st post....took delivery of NEW car on xmas eve (nice xmas present!!).

In that case, we need to get to the bottom of this.

>> It doesn't work downhill - if you release the footbrake the car starts rolling forward immediately.
>> On our MINI and e83 X3 it did work downhill

I don't doubt what you say about the mini and e83 x3. But this is a Z4 forum and I was just stating what my Z4 definitely does. Doesn't surprise me that other models are different. The Z4 has an uphill-start-assist feature, it doesn't have a downhill-descent-assist feature.

>> If our car doesn't have it, BMW is either going to retro fit hill assist to our car or they are buying it back.
>> Hill Start Assistant is listed as standard equipment on the sDrive20i in the sales brochure. Page 60

(Amateur legal advice warning :) ) I don't have the brochure in front of me, but I'm sure it also says somewhere that specifications are subject to change without notice and that one should confirm exact specification with dealer prior to purchase. If anyone is intending complaining to BMW that the feature isn't there when their car arrives, you'll strengthen your case if you put in writing to the dealership prior to delivery of your car that you placed the order based on the spec in the brochure, and you expect the car's spec to be as stated in the brochure, as they didn't explicitly advise you of anything different prior to placing the order.

Might also be worth asking BMW directly for clarification rather than dealers?

Back on topic -->

A press document from the sDrive20i launch list hill-start assistant as standard equipment.

I hope and expect this to be a non-issue. At worst a handful of cars were built wrong.

If not . . .
I'm not a lawyer. British law is a complete mystery to me. In the US, BMW NA would be in a mad rush to avoid a class action.

Downhill start assist makes sense in the X3. On the MINI not so much.

Yep, says its part of the DSC system.

It amazes me how much comes as standard on these cars. Xenons on my 1'er last year were nearly an extra £1k!!!!

(mind you, Z4 is more pricey than a 1'er to begin with).

My E89 2.3 has it mines is 2010 59 plate February Reg. Has it in first gear and reverse, great for reverse parking on a hill

On my 2006 2.0 (standard fit hill start assist!) the assist works when facing downhill ONLY if you have reverse engaged - makes sense as it only wants to prevent you going in the opposite direction than you are intending to go...

I just sent this enquiry to BMW UK:

Hello,

Hill-start Assistant is listed as Standard Equipment on a Z4 sDrive 20i. I've seen an owner's report in an internet forum saying the Z4 sDrive20i do not have this feature. He is writing that his car does not have it and he's been told by two dealers that none of the sDrive20i Z4s have it.

Are the Z4 sDrive20i cars being built with Hill-start Assistant?

I'll post their reply in this thread.

Thanks for taking the time to send that , I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealer who supplied my car.

Hmmmm very strange that the new 2.0 doesn't seem to have it.

Wonder if its got anything to do with the auto stop/start function...? :?

Other BMW built cars have both auto stop-start and hill assist.

Adding hill assist is mostly software. Most of the mechanical parts and sensors needed are also required for dynamic traction control, parking brake and corner brake control.

Guy's,
Z4 20i does not come with hill start assist, that's official now ! Can't say anymore at this point but will update later. (OP)

Agree! Audi charge £65 for it on the A1 but you can activate it through the VCDS software.

This seems like a nonsense to me;my 2.3i has the electronic hand brake and i can't imagine using it successfully without the hill start function but maybe it's just what you get used to.Hope you get a satisfactory outcome to this.

I would be asking why is it listed as standard in that case, and is there any other standard kit it doesn't have!
