I bet its something like the start stop complicating the matter. TBH, I'd rather have start stop than hill assist anyhow... I mean hill assist is nice, but not a must have, just means you have to have better clutch control, and if you're getting an auto it hardly matters anyhow with creep.

+1

And it must be even easier now with the electronic parking brake, no more wrestling with a brake lever and pressing a button on and off in a stop/start situation.
And as you say, its not needed on an auto. :)

Have you tried it? The EPB has no feel. There is a delay from pressing the button until the brakes release. And you do have to pull up on it and push a button . . .

Proabably wrong here but I thought that the electronic handbrake in the E89 just clicked off by itself if you drove off?

I thought that at first. On my Audi A1 a number of conditions have to be met before auto stop/start activates.

I've also discovered if the engine has switched off and you activate a phone call over bluetooth, it seems to automatically restart.

Never had electronic parking brake or hill start before but my 1'er has stop/start, and I'm struggling to see how that could affect it?

For the stop/start to work, the car needs to be in neutral with the clutch pedal released (and other battery/temp conditions need to be met).

For the hill start, the car isn't going to be in neutral, so I am confused how the stop/start comes into it, or am I getting it totally wrong?

In the 1'er, if you have the engine stopped via stop/start, and the car decides it needs the engine running (i.e. aircon or possibly power requirements) then it will start the engine on its own.

Our 2008 MINI had both stop/start and hill start assist. So do many other BMW built cars. In general the two work together just fine.

The R56 MINI shares a technology base with cars of the e90 3 series generation. So does the e89.

Then they either 'forgot' (not likely) or decided to take things off to make more of a distinction between the 20i/28i and the 35i/35is? Only BMW (likely GmbH) will know...

I've also got a sDrive20i, bought it at the end of November. It doesn't have hill start assist, not found it an issue for me so far though, too busy enjoying the car!

Well having an E89 myself yes i have tried it. I can certainly feel the brakes being engaged, and disengaged when operating the EPB. There is a slight delay when applying the EPB, but it seems fairly instant when its released. Its just a matter of pushing and pulling a small lever. Im sure once you get used to it you'll be fine.

Ok now I'm really confused

My car is 2 months old 2.0sdrive built late November 2011

According to above info it shouldn't have hill assist but it behaves as if it does. Every morning I have to turn left at two uphill junctions, the car isn't warm enough for auto stop start to activate but if I use the hand brake there's definitely a short delay defore it releases, if I only use the foot brake there's also a short delay after releasing the pedal before the car rolls backwards.

Going to talk to the dealer this weekend so I'll see what they think! ( picking up new 3 series so we'll be there anyway). Either I have hill assist or my brakes are sticking!

Only owned my 35i for a couple days and did noticed sometimes it holded on my slopped drive without rolling sometimes.... realise now i have hill assist and surprised as well for a manual car with this clever feature.

An update on the issue I have with Hill Assist.
The dealer with help from BMW uk are putting me in a brand new 20i auto next weekend, at no cost to me.
So it's a win win situation, I get a 12 plate 2012 car replacing my 61 plate, they are transferring my payments to date into the new finance.
I'll post some photo's next weekend ?

Happy to hear the BMW came through for you.

Trivia:
-- In the US they call this a "Trade Assist."

=================

BMW UK have not responded to my email.
Hill-start Assistant is still listed as standard equipment for all Z4's on the website and in the downloadable brochure.

Thanks guy's.
I pretty happy, there also putting me up in a 4 star hotel for the night which is a nice gesture from the dealer.
