e86 tall drivers rearview mirror relocation

Anyone heard of or seen a DIY for relocating the rearview mirror in an e86? I’m 6’4” and the current position is bloody annoying - it blocks visibility and is next to useless for seeing what’s behind, anyway. Perhaps moving it somewhere around where the sunglasses compartment is in the roof. I wouldn’t bother with it at all if it were not legal requirement - I can see behind much better with wing mirrors - and I am not actually worried about whether it’s already poor usefulness is retarded by moving it somewhere else, just that it passes inspection.

The solution could also be a total replacement, meaning not re-using the current mirror. That would entail moving the alarm beacon/light thingy as well, but I guess that is all - mine does not have rain sensor.

Is the mirror attached to the windscreen with a glued-on mounting ‘button’ that the mirror assembly slots into, or some other way?

Get a video based one, so you can place the screen wherever is comfortable.

Camera could be mounted on the bulkhead between the seats.

Is it a legal requirement?

They way I understood it the vehicle must have 2 functioning mirrors,
On my Defender truck cab I only have the 2 wing mirrors and it's passed every MOT for 7 years,

Lower your seat?

I have non-M seats, set low as possible, and I kinda like them. I was at one point thinking about replacing with some aftermarket sporty-type jobs, and mounting them low as possible, but have been thinking recently I like it as is. Easier to move mirror, maybe.

Yes, it's a legal requirement. If there is a panel behind you that blocks the rear view (like in a transit van) then you don't need a central mirror, but if you have glass, then you should have it.

My nephew has a stripped down Boxster with a rear view camera to replace the mirror, it’s legal here, the rest of the car isn’t but the rear view is 😄

E85 and keep the roof down? Easy fix.

Can't see an E86 owner going for that option - and surely the mirror will still be in the OPs line of vision?

Where are you? I’m in Finland - need to check legality of cameras as a substitute. Here, i think it is that you have to have rearview If you have no obstruction and rear window.

Canada.... there must be an automobile agency or testing facility with knowledge of the rules in Finland. As a last resort I also suggest government websites but if anything like here they will be extremely confusing and hard to search.

I have the exact problem! 6 ft 2 (ish) I am getting old, and cant stand the visibility. I am seriously considering one of these...Has back-up camera built in! I figured I get power from the rear view mirror...

I'm guessing the problem with that will be it will take up much more forward vision than the standard one!
