Hi to all
guys need your help. My e86 3.0 si has problem with steering wheel. I can not control car as it changes hardness of the steering wheel permanently and even direction if road is bumped or has waves. Car has 19 inch front wheels 225/30

thanks in advance

This sounds like it could be the "notchy steering" issue with the power steering. This typically happens in hotter weather, and is worth searching for on the forum. I think the forum needs a bit more info from you to really understand it.

Thanks for response. Weather is subtropical, nothing special. In BMW service center we updated firmware but problem not solved. Steering frequently changes its hardness. Moreover when I push brake SW turns left and right, very hard to control car. I really fighting with car. I'm interesting if somebody has similar problem with large tyres?
Thanks

I've experienced a little of this when driving 'enthusiastically' on a bumpy road. I've read somewhere on the forum that it may be to do with the electric assisted steering. If it is then someone has done a guide where they take things to bits and adjust the engagement. I've learned to live with it and will one day get round to having a look.
best of luck :driving:

[ref]SofTop[/ref], It sounds like it isn't the normal notchy steering issue, that tends to happen when the steering wheel is being turned by the driver. In this case it sounds like it's a combination of things but we don't really have enough to go on. I would start with wheel alignment and bearings, brake discs (although you'd hear a warped disc), track rod ends etc. If I didn't find any issues there, I'd move to the rack itself and see if linkages are in good order although I've never had to do that on a Zed.

Oh, and I forgot - this is worth a look as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v09ZgIMOZQw&feature=youtu.be

Also the changing direction on waves in the road sounds like he is describing tramlining... does the OP have run flat tyres on? Obviously if so then thats the first thing to change.. sounds like a classic combo of run flats and sticky steering here

Thanks to all of you!
All your listed symptoms has my car and Yes it is runflat tyre. One racing driver also told me that reason can be tyres, but in othercase why electric power faults? I have small car with hydraulic steering wheel and no such issue found. Much better holds road.

I thought sticky/notchy steering only affected the earlier cars, so would not apply to this E86?
Likely culprit for me is the tyres - runflats, 30 profile side wall, and are they a matched pair in make and tread...?

Nope I had a facelift 3.0si that suffered it and not the first.. cured with the forum mod tho on the eccentric ring tho

Hi Qartveli,
see this link for how to adjust the assistance from the electric steering. This sounds more like your problem.

Also, as others say - ditch the runflats 8)
