it is a separate component but cannot be separated without braking them, that's why so many people hate them as if you forget they are on and put your roof up they can break. I was in contact with a guy in Germany who was making the under part of the mechanism as this is the part that must shatter when you forget. Not entirely true. Mine have come apart a couple of times while flying off the car at either side during those forgetful roof operation moments. Both times they have simply clipped back together are as good as new.

Correct, and I have separated 2 sets of grey to paint black.

I stand corrected, That's fantastic news, Then it should be possible to purposely split to copy, when I tried it with mine (as they must have been assembled at manufacture) I felt sure they would brake if I forced them so I gave up.
