E85 rescue. I can fix this… Right?

This will be my build log as I try to bring my Z back to life.

In my introduction post I showed some of the issues with my ‘retired race horse’. Ziago, as he has been affectionately named, was suffering at the hands of a 19 year old. He was beaten mercilessly and shows the scars of it.

Today my father in law and I attempted to change the brakes. They are mostly beyond saving.

When we got the car in the air I saw something that made me want to throw in the towel.
The skid plate has been mangled and then it got worse. A 100mm long gash in the under carriage and into the cabin under the passenger side seat.

Where I live, that is an automatic failure for inspection.

The interior needs to come out anyway. I just hope the rip can be hammered into place and welded shut.
Ive never been one for body work but I’m going to learn now.

I have already ordered new suspension components.
A new wiring harness for the headlights.
I picked up some new wheels for it.

I can fix it.. I can fix it…

I'm no expert, but happy to provide some encouragement.

Seems entirely fixable to me with a decent weld. Although you might need some extra material to cover the crack once you've hammered everything back into place, as it's unlikely you'll end up with a seamless gap.

I've seen cars with worse holes caused by rust, which is an even worse situation!

I would leave welding in the hands of an expert, amateur electric welding can cause irreparable damage to the car's electronics. You get what you pay for in life and money spent on quality repairs is never wasted. A skilled welder should be able to fix that very easily and cheaply especially if you strip both sides of the area down to bare metal.

Agreed on the above; get a pro to weld that shut (after you’ve removed the interior due to the fire hazard) and it should be just fine

Thanks all.
It’s just one more thing to add to the list of crap that is wrong with this car.
Ive welded floor pans before, replaced entire sections too. It was just not something I wanted to find after all of the disappointment already with the true condition of the car.

I need to repaint the car and pull out all of the dents and god-knows-what happened to the hood.

It sounds like you'll be able to fix the floor then.

And as someone else said well done for fixing an unloved Z4.

And here is the list of ALL of the faults.
base module 5 ZKE 2
24 GM: Relay for central locking, locking
38 GM: Windscreen washer pump

Engine electronics DME 7
2716 DME: Oxygen-sensor heater after cat.

2742 DME: Misfire, cylinder 1
278B DME: Temperature sensor, engine
coolant
281C DME: Bit-serial data interface (BSD):
signal
281D DME: BSD generator: signal
289D DME: Oxygen-sensor heater after cat.
conv., bank 2: function
29A1 DME: Oxygen sensor after cat. conv.,
bank 2: signal

Steering angle sensor LWS 3
04 LWS: Slider fault (adjustment operation)
05 LWS: Internal fault (EEPROM)
0B LWS: Sensor/vehicle allocation incorrect
or not available

Stability system MK60 DSC/DXC 2
5E1F ABS-DSC: Vehicle identification

Automatic heating/air conditioning IHKA 4
0F IHKA:AUC sensor
11 IHKA: Potentiometer, fan
33 IHKA: K bus, outside temperature
36 IHKA: K bus, coolant temperature

Radio RADIO 1
02 RAD: Fault in aerial power supply

Seat memory, driver SM 1
0D SMF: Control-unit fault: motor bridge
faulty

Instrument cluster KOMBI 2
87 KOMBI: K bus
F5 KOMBI: No CAN identification (ASC)

Light switching centre 2 LM 3
13 LSZ2: Control-unit fault
16 LSZ2: Wire / switch, turn indic., sh. circ.
to earth
17 LSZ2: Wire/switch, main b./headl.fl., sh.
circ. to earth

Centre console control panel LKM 2
05 SZM: Undervoltage, seat heating
06 SZM: Undervoltage, roller sunblind

Highly unlikely that these are all separate individual faults. High probability of a battery supply problem, check the main cable and that the earth is making good contact

I am going to start at the fuster cluck of a headlight rats nest. The PO hardwired the headlights and there is a fault of short to ground. That is probably causing all kinds of CAN bus errors.

Brakes are done.
New suspension goes on tomorrow.
New wheels go on tomorrow.
Then I get to tackle the electrical gremlins. Yay.

One obvious question......have you got the car balanced on two axle stands?

If so; well done on your 'fulcrum point' physics! :D

Another point... as I see you are in the US, could you not just go and shoot the previous owner and claim 'self defence' or some other mitigating circumstances?

The other two are under the LCA subframe mounts. It is actually balanced on 3.. there are 4 under there but for some reason the one on the pass side isnt actually supporting the car. I have climbed in and out multiple times with my laptop and it has never even shifted.

As a firearm owning American.. I detest gun violence.. :?

I have been contemplating calling a lawyer. The gauge cluster has been swapped so the milage is incorrect which was not disclosed. That is actually a felony. With the suspension also being unbolted and him not telling me, insisting it would be more than fine on the 6 hours drive home, that constitutes willful negligence.
But, is it worth it? Dealing with lawyers and such? I doubt it..

In the end you will however have an amazing car that you can justly say you have saved from the scrapyard. Been said already but' WELL DONE TO YOU'

New shoes!
Suspension FIXED!
The UltraRacing brace no longer fits, It is off by a good 10mm so I imagine there is some twist in the body now from the.. terrible drive back from New York City.

I have started recoding modules. I need to get ISTA working to do individual module tests.

Thats my drive and motivation.
I guess I didnt get the car that I wanted, but I got the car that I deserved.
Something busted, broken, unloved, and abused.

Yay wiring…
The PO.. ugh. Hardwired headlights??
No wonder so many things are bad. There are shorts and broken wires everywhere.
Thankfully the passenger side is not AS bad.
