E85 Hydraulic steering conversion part 1

Hydro-z4
Would much appreciate your M54 conversion thread. I have a very basic question for the conversion with this engine - I have a 2004 E85 with the 2.5i M54 engine and I have just taken a good look underneath, I cannot see any obvious mounting points for the pump, I assume it will be somewhere below the alternator but cannot see any mounting points that would be used for the pump, have you a photo of a pump fitted in the area - is the mounting integrated with the alternator mount ??

I suspect you sourced the pump without the M54 mounting brackets?
They are pictured below...

If you're missing these brackets then they are available separately from BMW.
They're also used for mounting M52/M54 engine in E36/E38/E39

Bracket rear 32421438695

hydro-Z4 - thanks for your quick reply. I have sourced a serviced LF-20 pump which has two mounting brackets attached, one is an aluminium casting attached by 3 bolts to the face of the pump, the other is a steel bracket that attaches somewhere on the engine to the rear. The problem I have looking at my M54 current engine pulley configuration is that I cannot see how the whole pump assembly attaches to the engine. I have a frontal picture of the M54 engine (loaded from online) with a hydraulic pump installed, it appears to be positioned directly below the alternator with an idler pulley in between, I am now assuming that there are no mounting points for the pump directly on the engine casing but a mounting frame that holds the alternator, the hydraulic pump and the idler. Am I on the right track and if so I will obviously need this mounting frame to attach my LF-20 pump and the alternator and idler. I will try an add a picture file in another thread to show the pulley arrangement as I have discovered to see if you agree with the serpentine belt route.

I attach a picture of the current serpentine belt routing on my M54 engine and a picture of an M54 engine with hydraulic pump installed from pictures I obtained online, it looks as though the pump mounting is integrated with the alternator mounting P1010974.JPG

Thanks for the mounting bracket pictures, I will take advice from others and drop the LF-20 and go for the LF-30, can you tell me where the brackets attach to on car with the M54 engine

The steering pump brackets mount onto the M54 oil filter housing

This picture is pretty clear on location of mounting screws.

Thanks Z4_hydro - saw your msg. and have just gone outside and stuck my head under the car and can see the two mounting points on the bottom of the oil filter housing, had me confused at first since the lower idler pulley is mounted there which clearly has to be removed to accommodate the pump mounting brackets. Assume it will take either the LF-20 or LF-30 brackets.

Hi Raymond, my power steering went out a few weeks ago and I'm considering a rebuild.
Can you send me a PM with these conversion photos, it would help a lot.
Thank you

Hi, I’m looking to carry out this conversion on my e85 M54 engine, but the pictures are not available. Does anyone have this full thread or know of another with all of the part numbers and instructions? I have tried to find a specialist to do this but no one wants to.

Better look at this thread Michael, https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=118282&hilit=power+steering+conversion For the intermediate shaft which is the biggest problem https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2005408#p2005408 https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2394644-Converting-Your-E85-E86-to-Hydraulic-Steering

These are the only pictures I have of the conversion. The yellow shaft is the Z4M but the recess for the input shaft is thinner

If you speak to [ref]usel[/ref], he is now modifying intermediate shafts to suit this conversion.

Excellent! Ray, I so appreciate your help. Mike
You are welcome Mike. Just bear in mind the MPG does take a little hit. The original car that I converted did about 60000 miles on the conversion before being written off.

Don't know if there's a way to tag people directly but I want to give a massive thanks to all of you guys who have provided information on this post, especially to:
- raymond.harper
- hydro_z4

Off the back of your guidance info (and numerous video snippets on YouTube), I've completed the installation on my 2004 3.0i M54 - with a fair level of fettering to get things nice and neat. And in actuality it seems to be one of those jobs which feels harder than it is in practice.

Happy to help others who may need help on the process - I've got a few photos which might be of use too
