E85-E86-E89... Again

Sorry if this has been done to death, but much like sportadz in another potential owner thread I am (was maybe) about to go down the route of Z4C ownership.

HOWEVER... after doing a sense check with friends and family I've been unable to answer questions such as:

Them: "How much more is the drop top? Surely you should save more money and get a drop top..."
Me: "Well... ermmm... the roadster is actually significantly cheaper....

Them: "What about the new one with the folding hard top?? How much more are they?"
Me: "Well... ermmm... they're probably about the same"

Them: "Are you mad??"

So... Am I mad for wanting one in the current market?? Is the z4c special enough to answer the above?

Yes.

You can pick up roadsters for £5k. Coupes still demand good money around the £10k mark. Newer e89's are in excess of £15k.

Not really slightly more, or slightly less IMO. 5k is still a lot of money, the roadsters just good value now that it's older on paper. In reality it's still got the lines and style to pull of being a more modern car.
 
It all depends whether you desire a 'drop top' - I did and so I find it odd that the 3.0si roadster is generally cheaper than a comparable coupe.
As for the E89 that's different animal completely.
 
It all depends what your priorities are and what you want to pay. I have just sold a 2005 2.2 E85 Roadster with 50000 miles on the clock with MSport heated memory seats in really good condition for under £4500. If you look carefully on the Forum and are patient you will find a good roadster at a very affordable price. Coupes are a fair bit more. My preference is the roadster because I love to drive with the hood down. Hence I have purchased an E89 with the folding hard top. So you have the best of all worlds. Prices are coming down on the E89s and when the new model appears will probably fall even more. They are, however, still significantly more than the E85. I would go and drive the cars and then see what suits you best within your budget.
 
I have read the comments on the E89 being more of a GT however I think the comments on price are out.
There are E89 30i's at E86 prices...

Number5 picked up a nice E89 23i forum car for just over £7k. Still newer than an E86. £15k ones are a lot newer.
 
The best thing is to test drive a few, there is no doubt the E85/6 and E89 are completely different cars to drive (I have owned both), the E85/6 being more of a sports car while the E89 more of a GT, it really depends what you want from the car, that also goes for either a drop top or a coupe, you will get lots of divided opinion on here regarding which one
 
Oh dear... I thought you guys would make this easier for me...

srhutch, that was the point I was trying to make.

I love the Z4C it's the only one out of the three I've driven and since the day I first saw one I've adored the looks but the E89 is also pretty...

Out of the two, assuming the e85 is now out of the picture. I’d go e86 everytime. But it’s all due to personal preference, I love the look of the coupe. Money aside, since they’re similar price as said by srhutch drive both and see.

It was Rusty that said it, but it’s about the best advise going tbh.

Drive all three, hopefully it will helpmake your mind up.
 
Ok thats more like it... ! The E86 in question is a 2008 sport, sapphire black with red leather, MV2's, 55k on the clock, no satnav, no xenons. Drives like new. Is £10,625 a sensible price?

But what happens when your out for a drive in that dark and dismal coooope, and you spot the roadsters with their grinning drivers. Then you realise, you made a mistake :P
 
So that I don't offend anyone with my thoughts on the never ending saga of which one is best.....

If you buy an E8* then you will be judged to either....

having a midlife crisis
no imagination
thinking outside the box
given up on life
have a zest for life
know a bit about decent cars
know nothing about cars
trying too hard to be young again (depending on your age)
should have bought a 3 Series

You'll just have to guess which one is for the E85, E86 and the E89.
 
I love the lines of the e86. That was the deciding factor for me, I bought it with my heart, but have not regretted a second of it. :D
