E85 accident damage

Hi all,

Very unfortunately, I had an accident in my 2005 Z4 2.2 SE. I only got it 8 months ago and have cherished it ..... up until recently when I clipped a curb, span and a bollard on the passengers side. This snapped the rear passenger side wheel at the hub and also has extensively damaged the ‘A Frame’ at the passenger side door. It’s also damaged some suspension parts on the front driver side wheel and some cosmetic damage to the other passenger side panels. To say I’m mortified is an understatement as I fell in love with the car as soon as I got it.

Anyway, to the point. A friend of my Dads is a body work specialist and has worked on Z4’s before. He has said everything except the A frame is repairable. He says, in his experience, the frame on the Z4’s is built ‘like a tank’ as it’s a convertible, it has to be able to withstand much more impact that a standard car. The result is that they are virtually impossible to straighten and if you can, it will never be the same again. I just wanted to see if anybody had had the same experience and if anybody has had any success stories?

I’m considering the options regarding insurance but I have quite a high excess, combined with insurance premiums increasing, getting only a proportion of the value etc etc, I don’t know if it’s worth going down that route. The car was purchased as it was a really good clean example and they are set to appreciate in value, as I’m sure you all know. For me, it’s more personal and sentimental and I have the time and resources through friends to carry out the repair over a longer space of time, hopefully bringing the cost down, although as of now, I’ve been told it is impossible or highly unlikely to ever be ‘the same car again’. I’m reluctant for such a good car to be crushed and written off by insurers.

So, what I’m asking is:

Has anybody had experience of refurbishing a Z4 Roadster A Frame?

Does anybody know of a specialist that can do this?

Or failing that, would anybody like to buy a well maintained 2005 2.2SE with 97k miles on the clock for parts? Roof motor works fine, 3 working 5 spoke split rims with 3 good tyres, well maintained interior, engine has split in the sump but other than that is good.

Not too hopeful but thought I’d put it out there

s**t mon. U must be gutted. I know I would be.
Time to start looking for the replacement 3.0L that you shoulda bought in the first place?

Yeah, sadly that’s not an option right now. Yeah, completely gutted. I went for the 2.2 as there are fewer around as they were only produced for a short while and the logic was that it would appreciate more. That said, as soon as I got the car I knew it wasn’t about investment as I fell in love with it the second I was behind the wheel. Anyway, it doesn’t seem to matter now sadly. If I’m able to get another, I’ll def go for the 3.0

Really sad to see your car looking like that OP. :(

But at least is sounds like you are OK, which is the main thing.

Sadly I can't see it being economic to repair your car - your best bet if you have the space, time, inclination and ability would be to break it for parts.

Wouldn't bother repairing that bud. It will never drive the same again :( . selling it on down the road would be a problem too as the repair will be noticeable and stick out like a sore thumb. best to write it off and move on. :driving: There are some lovely examples for sale. I've seen a few on this forum that look tasty. Glad you're ok and can live to tell the tale.

Sad to see, but glad you're ok.

Look on the bright side, the 2.2 is even rarer now. Get another!

Your ok that's the main thing.

The bang at the A pillar looks deep and terminal though. If you have the time and space break it for parts, to recoup your money. Then find another.

Thanks for all of your replies guys, yes of course, the main thing is that nobody was injured or worse.

Well it does seem to have given you double vision

the car is insured, right? so get the insurance payout, and buy another non crashed car. its not like zeds are hard to come by.

they should give you market value for your car - at the moment, market value is very good, being as its summer and convertibles are in high demand, so you should be able to negotiate a good payout for your car, minus i'm assuming a £500 excess? and then you have the chance to upgrade to a 3.0i if you want to as well.

seems silly to me to spend more money on a car that will probably never be the same again. also what is the situation with your no claims bonus? generally a claim just knocks it back by 2 years rather than completely wiping it clean, so rising insurance premiums probably not so much of an issue, unless you're young and already paying through the nose for insurance.
