I have just received the kit, so will detail the installation steps of it.
I thought you'd bailed on the idea
Looking forward to how you find the kit 👍🏻

I did, but decided that it would make a nice R&D project for our gate automation system, which is also Linux based

I finally received the z4 headunit, and it looks like it’s missing some buttons compared to the e46 headunit, so I’ve programmed in new ones.

I did SEL for back and 6 for menu. Menu is also on the steering wheel as the face. Both steering wheel and headunit has the controls for next and previous track. I just couldn’t show it, because if I start music, the video cuts off.

Baris, what is the process if you wanted to re-assign buttons at a later stage. What software/cable is needed??

You would either need to tell me before hand or return the tv tuner back to me for the button re-assign.

Side note, you cannot use any button you want. The buttons still work in the background for the OEM system. This is why you have to leave it on the aux screen, which uses the least amount of buttons. So things like Menu and Tone cannot be used.

Started the install now but ran out of time yesterday.

The installation looks very simple, basically two cables to pull from the from to the back (new mic and aux cable).

Thanks Baris,

I’ll take a look at what buttons are’nt used in Aux mode to see if there any other options.

Baris if I have a Z4 with the nav screen, cd changer and no TV tuner, what do I need to buy from you? I assume the TV tuner kit and the bracket and perhaps a microphone?

That is what I have in the Z and bought the tv unit with microphone and brackets

Not yet, but the list is simple:

- Remove airvent
- Remove radio
- Attach aux cable (replace existing one)
- Remove A pillar covering / centre light to fit microphone and feed wires down to the centre console to meet up with the AUX cable
- Remove centre console screws passenger side and push the two wires up high there (not removing the console as there are only two cables, not the big loom I needed to put in for the satnav retrofit on a previous Z)
- Feed the cables through the centre hole into the boot (probably need to put a pull wire through first, cannot remove the plastic really in the centre console as that looks too fragile).
- Fish the satnav cable from the back ind of the nav computer and pull back in boot through the same hole
- Fit tuner and connect satnav cable, microphone cable and aux cable

Nothing seems too challenging (just hope the airvents play ok on this Z as I have come across 1 Z where that was a challenge to remove)

Will photograph the steps of the routing and dismantling of the various parts

The cd changer cable is not the same as aux though and I don’t think I can use that. Also too short to get to the tv unit as that cable is tight to the changer

If you have a CD changer can't you use that instead of running an aux? Or did you want to keep the changer?

You can use the cd changer audio, as long as you have a cd changer working with a disc inside it. You would need to specify it, as I need would need to make the connection different for it.

Ah seems there are two options when ordering:

I'd go for that one instead I think

That’s for if you have a tv tuner and you want to send that in for upgrade. This will save you £30.
