E85/6 Z4M CarPlay/Android Auto with original hardware

There is a very exciting update coming for this setup.

I’m just waiting for a z4 headunit to arrive so I can test it and make a video for you guys. If everything works out, as it has on the other systems, then no need to think about the Idrive controller anymore and it will be all implemented within the original system.

Look forward to seeing this.

Awesome! Integrating the new system with the existing controls makes this an almost definite future upgrade for me. Nicely done

+1 That looks just the ticket! Are you at the stage of being able to offer a complete kit now? I'd be very keen if so :)

I’m just waiting on a z4 headunit to arrive from eBay, and I will make sure it’s all working on there first. In theory it should, but need to make sure.

Once I’ve sorted that out, I will make a quick video, and post it up.

Then it’s the same we discussed in this topic, but without the Idrive style controller.

Still need to connect audio cable to the back of the headunit for the aux, bracket for tv tuner and connect the microphone. And optional tv retrofit cable, if you don’t have tv tuner.

This will make the SAT NAV cars now the ones to have imo as thats pretty damn impressive! SOOOOOO tempted by this! keep us posted with an official kit.

+1 this would be an ideal upgrade to my nav setup.

Looks great [ref]Baris - Carphonics[/ref]. A self install kit (ideally with video instructions) would be of major interest to me.

Awesome, the main downside was the idrive wheel and where to put it. Using the original controls makes this a much more integrated upgrade and deffo makes the sat nav cars worth having!

Really, it’s something BMW should be doing in the same way Porsche offer retrofit PCM(?) upgrades for older models. They’re all to happy to post about their heritage online and use their more evocative models to appeal to the enthusiast, yet the support is poor.

I tried highlighting this and their approach to parts supply, think gearbox spares etc, on their BMW heritage instagram (the modern day equivalent of writing a ‘strongly worded letter’ ) when they used a Z4 coupe as their subject. Surprisingly they didn’t reply :tumbleweed:

The microphone bit is not quite clear to me, does the built in one need changing / new one added? If it is a new one, I think it would be easy to route somewhere

The original microphone can be used, but I would need to modify it first. Or a universal microphone can be supplied.

baris, do you guys fancy coming to my workshop to do this to my car more than happy to pay full cost and travel? Id document it also More than happy to work something out here to make this happen and maybe be the guinea pig but ...... it would need to be an OEM level of install.... Drop me a DM to discuss more if you confident we can make this work.

Apologies, I didn’t realise the focus on my video was on the hairs on my arm!
I did an install on an e46 m3 yesterday and took a more clearer video.

I’m late to this thread - great work Baris. I’m very interested too. Just to confirm, this latest iteration should function entirely via Bluetooth?

Thank you.

CarPlay / android auto works via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I believe the connection starts via Bluetooth first and then switches to wifi as well.

So yes, completely wireless. It will start the connection as soon as you wake the car up, whether it will be unlocking the car or opening the door. Rather than waiting for it to boot up, when the ignition is turned on.
