E60 M5 itch

Am I crazy? Or just a bit bored? But I have a nagging itch for an M5 to waft around in.
It would be nice to have a boot that's useful, and occasionally I like the idea on an auto. But I don't know if I have enough reason to go for an M5.

I've had the Z4M for two years now, longer than any other car. I love it still, but I still loved the 840 I sold to buy this and yet I know I did the right thing in selling that car.
I don't like leaving the roadster outside where it has to sit under trees, parking isn't great where I am. I don't go out enough for hoons in it, it gets used daily instead, where I occasionally get to press the loud pedal for a few seconds.

I think in reality I want both an M5 and my current car, but that's just wishful thinking. I've even considered an older 530 or something similar for (2-3k) to run along side the Z4 but that's no cheaper in reality and even less practicle with one parking space.

I'm rambling in my old age, I'm about to turn 31! Makes insurance cheap this year...

I'm sure we've discussed this before, but if you think a Z4M is expensive to run (I personally don't) then you're in for a shock when you see how much an e60 M5 costs.

Easiest way to think of it, is to double everything.

If you want fast wafting, then a 550 M-Sport is a better option - cheaper to both buy & run, and will still do 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.

If you don't mind the devil's fuel, then a remapped 535D M-Sport is an overtaking beast due to its masses of torque - problem would finding an unabused one to start with.

Big thread when woots was thinking about it. Can't see the point in the M5 if you can't use the zed to its potential. Go for the 535d instead.

No diesels! not unless it's a cheap snotter of a car to simply get me from A to B :fuelfire:

Like you mmm-five, I think the Z4M is very reasonable to run. I still like it a lot, I just wish it would rattle a little less and have a tad more space.

One thing I keep going back to on the E60, is it special enough on the inside? I feel like it was a dip in BMWs quality for the 5 series. The 6 looks more interesting on the inside....

Ye there would be too many worries for me. Would have to have a good warranty with it.

But I see the attraction, im mean your never going to use it like the Z, there like boats in comparison. but for luxury yes the 5 series is a lovely place to be. Just bloody big things especially compared to the Z.

My uncle has a 535d and he's had lots of problems with that too. Those big diesels are costly too when they get a few miles on them and they aren't economical at all 35 at most. But then an M5 looking at 11-15mpg? at £7.50 a gallon of super. 150 miles would cost £75  Even in the Z £75 gets 320-370 miles.

Makes a big car pointless, as surely a big car is for doing more comfortable big milage? Its not a sports car by any means just quick in a straight line. The new one sees figures over 35 I really like the new one apart from its not NA but we cant get away from that now.

I will always lust after a M5 as it's just that sort of car but I've read plenty of painful stories of owners that have been disappointed as its not lived up to their expectations, woeful economy it only comes alive at high revs & a lousy gearbox at slow speeds.

In saying that its hard not to be lured in by the V10 & I really love the understated nature of it but its a strange car to pigeonhole in the UK with our high fuel prices that's why the current one is appealing as the MPG is a vast improvement I would imagine.

V10 makes an epic noise, butI wouldn't fancy running one as a daily...
I agree it's bad enough running my M3 as my daily & that has two cylinders missing in comparison to the M5...but mine has a lot less complicated manual gearbox so less to go wrong.

Great deals on the new M5, cheaper to run than the Z4M at the moment.

£650 a month for 3 years and hand the key back, not bad at all for top spec.

Drove a new M5 for an hour on a recent BMW drive day. Amazing thing just amazing. Despite using every one of it 550 donkeys it still managed 21 mpg on the trip computer. Out of my price bracket to buy and I wouldn't buy one if I could afford it (actually I probably could !) but I'm glad to experienced the drive

"mmm -five" has this one in the bag 8) The V10 M5 is ludicrously expensive to fund & the 550i whether in 6 series or 5 is a peach of a car with much lower running costs yet almost the performance 8)

The E60 M5 is an awesome car but it's relatively cheap now for a reason. They are hideously expensive to run.

I could never make myself spend half that a month and have no car at the end. However much I do like the newer M5.

Tbh I have also considered an M3, I'd like to try another v8. In reality I think I'll keep the Z, it's still a great car. I just want a small fleet of others

Or you could wait 2-3 years, pay £650 a month for the following 3 years and own it outright at the end.

Ah, but then you are not covered by the warranty :D
Depends what you arrange with the supplying dealer, or what extra you're prepared to pay for the insured warranty.

Maybe Herminator should consider an older M5 (i.e. the 400bhp V8 e39) and see what the running costs are on that. You can pick them up quite cheaply, and with a bit of suspension work they can be made to handle quite well. Also it has a manual box, so no SMG/DCT to worry about.

Personally, I can see myself considering a F10 M5 in a few years time, but wouldn't bother looking at an e60 (a weekend with one was enough to put me off for life). But then, I also didn't get on with the e90 M3 that I had for a couple of weeks, and lots of people really rate them, so maybe it's just me :P

Having lived with my E92 M3 as a daily for nearly 10k miles I can see why the M3 didn't float your boat they are genuinely only exciting for maybe 20% of the time the other 80% they can be described as ordinary & just like a normal 3 series, I try to thrash the life out of mine as often as possible but in the real world our old 330d pretty much did the same job only with much better economy!

I do give praise to the M3's chassis though its very well resolved if you enjoy lighting the rears up. :driving:

I disagree, the e92 M3 plant your foot and it's just a rocket any gear the 330d has a bit of poke more torquey but it's the turbo makes it feel faster than it is, but nothing like the M3. Had the e46 330d 3 years 30k and the e92 M3 3 years 25k. I would call it more 50-50. Enjoyed the E92 for brute power but the E46 for it's go cart like feel.

But that's the draw to the M3 it can be ordinary then a monster in better ways than the M5 imo. The E92 is big compared to the e46 but the E60 is practically a boat, fantastic straight line speed but that's about it. It would be useless on the country roads round where I live. That V8 in the E92 is a masterpiece and the drama is fantastic. The V10 I'm sure incredible but adding the SMG I'm sure is not a positive thing.
