DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is the name given to a combination of DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), ASC+T (Automatic Stability Control + Traction) and DBC (Dynamic Brake Control).
As soon as you press the button you dis-engage the DSC mode and that mode is called DTC. The manual doesn't specify exactly what happens in this mode but it says it "reduces the stabilising influences". In my experience it appears to be much less willing to cut the engine power and so you get a lot more wheel spin. You still seem to get the full effects of DBC.
"Traction Control" is usually used to refer to cutting engine power to stop wheel spin, but I don't think all manufacturers use it to refer to *just* cutting of the engine power, so it's hard to really use the term in any meaningful way.
I really wish BMW would define it explicitly in the manual, I don't think it's safe to have people mis-understand this kind of thing. IMHO it's imperative you know exactly what the car is going to do, or attempt to do and why at any given moment.

All of my previous cars were FWD, and I've only had the Z4 for 2 months, with DSC on all of the time. I switched to DTC for a little bit the other day and taking a wider corner with no other traffic around I gave her some power. Scary but fun! I'll be doing much more practice getting used to the response before I do anything wilder though

wow I'm glad I have just read through this thread! Having bought my z4 without a manual (I didn't pick up on this when buying), I have totally had the wrong idea about all this.
I thought (nievely) that no assists were on as standard and that pressing DTC switched the traction control on :!: one time out in the wet with the DTC light on the back wheels came out a bit on a roundabout, with the triangle lighting up, and i thought to myself 'good job the DTC is on!'. Oh dear.
Now that I know whats what, will try switching everything fully off tomorrow!
