DSC Dilemma

Just give it a go in the dry after one press to see how you get on. :)

Personally I actually find that when it's in full safe mode, it does hold the car's acceleration back a bit even when the yellow light isn't flashing (the yellow light only seems to flash when the system is actively intervening in a situation, rather than when it's just trying to prevent a situation occurring!) Maybe I'm imagining it but after one press the car definitely seems to accelerate a little more briskly, particularly round a corner.

I'm afraid I can't think of any situation, other than a track, that I'd be brave enough to give it the lethal "3 second push and hold"! :o

One press and you should be ok, it lets a little bit more slip before interfering, hold it down so the traction is completely off and your on your own! If your not confident/experienced, don't turn it fully off IMO. :driving:

On the ///M we have only two options either on or off, there is no halfway like non ///M's

You learn something new every day... :)

What are the controls on the ///M when driver aids are on? Is it just that the ///M doesn't have a half-way safe house?

From what I've gathered the ///M's don't have DTC as they have an LSD, pressing the button deactivates DSC like on non ///M's

** There is no half-way on the non-Ms. **

The single press is not a half-way setting: it is NOT partially off. A single press leaves DSC (dynamic stability control) FULLY activated, and then activates DTC (dynamic traction control) for MORE TRACTION ... e.g. if driving in snow.

The press and hold for 3 seconds -----> that switches off DSC.

AGAIN: there is no half-off setting.

============================================
Summary:

Normal driving: DSC = ON, DTC = OFF
Single press: DSC = ON, DTC = ON
Press and hold for 3 seconds: DSC = OFF, DTC = OFF
============================================

Krusty - very clear, important to be precise :thumbsup:

So, in terms of how the car does for each, what actually happens ? - no light and the system will actively reduce engine power to the wheels and individually brake spinning wheels all the time to pretty much prevent sideways ; DTC on will deliver less power reduction and less aggressively brake spinning wheels, cutting in less quickly, designed to try to retain traction on slippery surfaces at lower speeds ; all off and the laws of physics are in complete control ?

is it bad that i have that light flashing at me all the time lol?

Nah - that's the objective, though arguably it means you're not having as much fun as you could br :evil:

haha well only had the Z since Decemeber so im taking it easy for now! although going round a bend with the back end out is quite exciting lol

As Kristy mentions above, and one press increases the traction, are there any downsides? Worse mpg tyre wear etc?

Krusty is going to shout at you in a minute Nova2k7 :lol:

Read back up... It's very clear at the bottom of the page before this :wink:

Page 18 of the Z4M handbook:

In contrast to the descriptions in the Owner's Manual for the BMW Z4, your BMW Z4 M Road- ster does not feature Dynamic Traction Control DTC.

Dynamic Stability Control DSC
DSC prevents slip at the drive wheels while starting off and accelerating the vehicle. DSC also recognizes unstable vehicle conditions, such as fishtailing or nose-diving. In these cases, and subject to physical limits, DSC helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducing engine speed and by applying brakes at individual wheels.

Press the button; the DSC indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. No more interven- tions to increase stability and forward momen- tum are carried out.

I always wondered if this is the case, can anyone confirm for definate?
When I have the car in full safe mode sometimes it seems to accellerate quite abit harder in the lower gears than others - I've always assumed this is the traction control trying to prevent wheelspin in more slippery conditions, but not lighting the dash up as it's not actively correcting a spin etc.

I'm not aware of the DSC holding any power back up until the point of correction. As far as I know it only holds power back when the light is flashing.

Could be wrong....

i did a drifting day in a 1 series, i'd love to have a go in the zed - except for the wear on the tyres
