DSC Dilemma

Ok, have owned our Zed now for 8 months and have never been brave enough to touch the DSC button.

Anyone else not touched it?

Feeling is that now I've covered around 6 thousand miles that I may be used to the DSC not allowing any slipperiness, so if i switch it off, I'm in a hedge (how much is it helping me?)

Really tempted today to hit the button, but it had been wet, so bottled it again.

Can't have my obituary saying 'He never did it', but also don't want it saying 'shouldn't have touched that button' !

Thoughts?

roundabouts are the thing, second gear, give it a bit....how much does half way house let you go...can you spin it in the dry with DSC half way engaged?
 
A good question. Personally, I don't take DSC off very often. I would hate to bin my car in a ditch. I reckon DSC has saved me once or twice on damp or slippery roads.

As Taz says, give it a go. Just be careful, and don't try too hard to get the rear sliding :)

Had a 200sx in the past, huge turbo lag, but onece it kicked in, it went like a scalded cat.

Lost the back end once and there was no 'progression', it just went.

No tears, but it was a warning.

I've also been on the 18th green on a local golf course in a 2.0 Capri due to negligence in the wet :?

Perhaps it's just me.

Slightly damp with DSC all the way on, roundabouts can still be unnerving when it kicks out, so I have yet to switch it even half way off. Looking for a safe place to play to be honest, but, I don't know anyone with a large private estate or free access to brands hatch :P
 
I turn it off all the time when i want some tail out fun.

How often do you see the yellow light flashing? If you're not seeing it kicking in i think you,'ll be ok.
 
I've played in the snow with various settings quite a bit because you don't have to be going very fast to break traction, but only in empty car parks, not on public roads. Even full on let's you slide a bit. Half off let's you slide enough to let you think you know how to drive (fun!). Full off will get you in trouble unless you really do know how to drive (rewarding but dangerous). Of course, if you try something insane beyond the limits of physics, you still will be in a ditch, or worse, even with DSC full on. The key is careful progression to find the limit and only slightly exceed it. Hard to do in normal driving unless you like driving in endless circles.

Give half off a go, but be careful. There's little reason for full off unless you're in a safe environment.

Ah, ok, so does the DSC flash yellow (when in complete safe mode) when it's helping you...or only if you've got it engaged?

scared my self half to death turing it fully off in the wet. have it off quite often in the dry tho, less slugish
 
Can't speak for others but an M will get plenty sideways with DSC on! Happened to me this evening, roundabout 2nd gear, slip road taken at an angle while systems (and I) try and reign things in. Heavenly only knows what would happen with it off.
 
One press and you should be ok, it lets a little bit more slip before interfering, hold it down so the traction is completely off and your on your own! If your not confident/experienced, don't turn it fully off IMO. :driving:
 
I have switched one and both off in snow.
one was fun, both was hairy.

I don't think the 2.0 has enough ummph to break traction in the dry.
but the mrs seems to get the triangle flickering through fast wet bends. (70+)

I haven't got the bottle.
 
There seems to be some confusion about what the buttons do. At least on the 2006-2008 models:

* Pressing once briefly: this ACTIVATES DTC (dynamic traction control) ... this may be a good thing to do when driving on snow ... it increases traction.

* Pressing and holding for 3 seconds: this DEACTIVATES DSC (dynamic stability control) .... it switches off the electronic stability control systems. This would be a very dangerous thing to do when driving on snow. But it is quite a fun thing to do with Sport mode activated (even on an Auto), if you can find a nice wide corner to swing around, if no-one else is around, and the back will shoot out, and the wheels will spin, and smoke will come billowing out of your tyres, with weird and wonderful screeching noises.
