DRL's on prefacelift

I was thinking about the low voltage thing. It doesn't make sense to me as there is no way to up the voltage when you need the lights on properly?

Surely this sort of thing is standard on modern electrics. iirc even the Z4 rear lights that have the twin level braking use lower voltage then full on hard braking.

It's an easy way to use the halogens as DRL's without blinding and the full power once the lights are switched on.

Hey ho - project on the shelf now while I get on a plane to earn some money

That's the thing though, from what I read in the manual, and from what billygilly said, all the DRL function does is allow you to leave the light switch on dipped beam permanently - turns them on and off with the ignition and no buzzer when you turn the engine off. In which case, there is nothing to switch when you want to go from DRL to proper lights, so they must be on at the normal voltage. :?

Like you say though, one for another day - sounds hectic, but enjoy the trip

The law.......

'In 2008 a new law was passed by the European Commission that meant all new cars and small vans purchased after February 2011 had to have daytime running lights, and lorries will follow suit from August 2012. The new vehicles will have the daytime running lights (DRL) that come on automatically when the engine is started. This law will not affect cars bought before this period and DRL´s will not have to be retro fitted'

They changed the law at the last minute so that only new models (doesn't includes facelifts IIRC) need to have DRL's and even then it's not law that you have to use them.

As fog lights are pretty crap in fog, why not use the fog lights?.Either as they are, or dimmed.Alternatively, some nice led's where the fogs are would look great.

That's a thought I've had, but I guarantee you'd just be asking to get pulled by the fuzz for that - I'm pretty sure your "but they're DRLs" would fall on deaf ears!

I think the way forward would be running AE as DRLs but it's just getting them programmed. I do recall seeing something in the software I have but, a) I was too scared to mess around with the settings and, b) I don't have AE anyway (although I'd be keen to see what lights it switched on). I'll try and have a look sometime and if I'm feeling brave I'll maybe try to change the settings...

I was also thinking of using the fogs!! You can actually get LED H7s etc from China! I've definitely seen new cars have DRLs in the fog holes, a Mini I think!
