Driving in Portugal

Just got back from Lisbon where I hired a car for a couple of weeks. Flaming 'eck.....!

Not all, not most but many of the drivers out there are absolutely clueless. They think that just because they can operate a machine with 4 wheels and an engine that they can drive.

They drive everywhere as if they are on a racing track, they tailgate you so close that at night it's hard to tell they are behind you as you just cannot see their headlights....yes, that close!

A wet road makes no difference as apparently, in Portugal a wet surface has no effect on braking distance over a dry one, they still want to get into your boot! In many cases they succeed rather well. I saw more crashes in two weeks than I have seen here in the past year. They cut you up and leave no margin for safety whatsoever. Notice I said crashes, not accidents. The definition of an accident is an unforeseen incident.

You are on the motorway overtaking lane because you are errr..overtaking. They come up right behind you at speed, flashing you to get out of the way. I have to say it's mostly BMW drivers.

They obviously attended the 'F**k you Jack' University of Driver Courtesy! If somebody acted like this towards you if you were walking along the street, you'd turn round and biff them! It's weird to reconcile the fact that I think they are great people and if they stuck to horse and carts, I would like them even more. Behind the wheel they are dangerous, as evidenced by their terrible accident statistics. In their defence, the road signage and layouts don't help. You get no warning when to turn off as the signs are on the exits, not before.....go figure.

I think they are all on a permanent sugar and coffee rush, there has to be some explanation!

I love it. Also just came back from Colombia yesterday, I must have driven nearly 1000km out there. Yes they flash, pomp their horns etc but there is no fecking about. Driving from Bath through Wiltshire this morning following inept individuals who can't drive at even 75% of the national speed limit get get pissed off when you overtake them just winds me up to no end.

The English as a whole can't handle their cars. Doddle along without a clue about what's going on. Having been all over, including Portugal and most recently Col, they have such good special awareness of their cars and others even if they do drive like on a track. It works.

It must have been something in the coffee when I was there, but the accident stats speak for themselves.

I feel much more relaxed now that I'm back.

Never experienced any problems driving in the Algar, though never been up Lisbon way. I'd rate Naples as the worst place drivers I've ever seen followed by Paris and Islamabad. Note all cities. :D

We went to the Amalfi coast in Italy last year and I found the same, I never got to see the scenery as me and my Missus spent the whole time with our eyes glued to the road looking for the next loony to appear from nowhere, its almost like they are risk averse as they dont seem to see any situation as dangerous... when we got back and drove from Manchester airport home, it felt blissful as you had some certainty that your fellow road used were going to at least follow the rules of the road..

Anyway its off to Lake Como this year and I am not driving its going to be Taxis everywhere :)

I used to travel to Portugal to follow the world rally championship round there and couldn't believe the driving standards. Obviously you would get the rally fans getting over excited and a bit racy near the stages but travelling between stages etc going from town to town village to village, Lisbon to Porto was often an experience I wouldn't want to repeat.
Would agree with buzyg that Naples area is a nightmare and would only use public transport but found northern Italy lakes area to be fine.

I suspect it's all Southern European countries and it's likely to be a function of the macho attitude of the men, and women, in these countries.

I drive a lot in Greece and mainland driver are pretty bad but once you get on the islands it's far worse.

Picture this. You're sitting at a red traffic light. The instant the light changes to green, the person at number 6 in the queue, leans on his hooter because you're not moving away, fast enough. Most Greeks are on their phones, usually with a frappe in the other hand and trying to change gear. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so dangerous.

The stats do tend to bare out the fact that we are reasonable drivers in the UK, even though our lane discipline is rubbish. I know the deaths through driving per capita in Greece are the 3rd worse in the civilized world.

I think that next time I'm in Lisbon I'm going to drive with my eyes shut, hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil! :|
