Just got back from Lisbon where I hired a car for a couple of weeks. Flaming 'eck.....!
Not all, not most but many of the drivers out there are absolutely clueless. They think that just because they can operate a machine with 4 wheels and an engine that they can drive.
They drive everywhere as if they are on a racing track, they tailgate you so close that at night it's hard to tell they are behind you as you just cannot see their headlights....yes, that close!
A wet road makes no difference as apparently, in Portugal a wet surface has no effect on braking distance over a dry one, they still want to get into your boot! In many cases they succeed rather well. I saw more crashes in two weeks than I have seen here in the past year. They cut you up and leave no margin for safety whatsoever. Notice I said crashes, not accidents. The definition of an accident is an unforeseen incident.
You are on the motorway overtaking lane because you are errr..overtaking. They come up right behind you at speed, flashing you to get out of the way. I have to say it's mostly BMW drivers.
They obviously attended the 'F**k you Jack' University of Driver Courtesy! If somebody acted like this towards you if you were walking along the street, you'd turn round and biff them! It's weird to reconcile the fact that I think they are great people and if they stuck to horse and carts, I would like them even more. Behind the wheel they are dangerous, as evidenced by their terrible accident statistics. In their defence, the road signage and layouts don't help. You get no warning when to turn off as the signs are on the exits, not before.....go figure.
I think they are all on a permanent sugar and coffee rush, there has to be some explanation!
