Double Din Fasica Progress [UPDATED: 1st September 2017]

This looks really good, great job! I've been desperate to get a tasteful double din install done since I bought my Z. Others have looked too DIY for my liking but this looks bang on with the vents. Are you planning to make the cad files available for sale or perhaps even selling completed units? I'm sure there's a few of us on here eager to do the same.

Looking forward to seeing updates 👍🏽

Yes, once finished I will upload the STL files and the 123D Design files to Thingiverse for people to download freely. I need to activate the tips thing in thingiverse, that way if people like it and wanna buy me a beer so to speak they can!

If people wanted, I may also offer to print for them. I got some quotes from online services and they want close to £50 PER SIDE!!!!! (It's in 2 halves due to max printer build area).... crazy money!! I wouldn't charge that much at all. I reckon maybe £10 or something and then it's up to the buyer to do the finishing touches - eg vinyl wrap it, smooth it, sand it & paint it what ever they want.

It's definitely worth a beer or few! I'd be more interested in the latter option if possible...
will be keeping up with your progress with a hawk eye... Look forward to seeing it completed. Nice work again

Thanks :) I've not actually worked out how I'm gonna fit the stereo in yet!! I was planning on just cutting the vent back, however I discovered today after looking closer it's all metal frame 😮 So not too sure on plan yet BUT I'll be sure to document and update here :)

Looking good! :) Well done for attempting this, I'd be interested in one for sure once you're at a stage where you're happy with it.

Thanks :) I'm getting there! I'm trying to make it a snug fit... so the "cage" is the right size for the Stereo's cage, I've yet to make some cut outs in the wall edges - I plan to do add those later so that when fitting the stereo's metal cage in , the tab things can be folded over so it can't just be yanked out! And as you may have seen I'm also trying to line up screw mounts too to use the 2 OEM screws the OEM Headunit is held by.

As I previously mentioned on Facebook

Seriously though, I'll be interested in having one ready printed by you when you've worked it all out.

Haha, I love that meme! Keep an eye on this thread as I'll be updating as I go :) current print is almost finished so I'll be able to test the screw mounting in the next hour or so

Progress is looking good! The 2 parts shouldn't be too much of an issue, we could all just use a strong thin metal rod of some sort and glue/plastic weld it to the back edge before wrapping it for rigidity etc.

Enjoying following the process and watching you perfect it  forum power :fuelfire:

A little input time!! Branding or No branding!??

View attachment 1

All of the "Markers" in the image are the cutouts or "non-committed" additions. By saving my design like this, means I have numerous options at the time of export. Eg I can quickly and easily export a vented or non-vented version, with or without extra USB mount hole and so on and so fourth.... But I'm curious if I should brand front of the unit with the Z4 lettering (exact same typeface as boot Z4 lettering). It would appear embossed. Again, I could quickly enough print with or without it, I'm just curious what people thought to the idea?

Regards

PS: *surface ;)

Coming on strong... This is exciting!
The straight edged vent slits are much preferred, better suits the angles in the car. While I Like the idea of another USB port, personally don't like wires around the dash if I can help it, so not for me...
same with the branding.. like the idea but not for me.

*Another hat taken off over here

Well, the USB would be optional just like the vents. In my case, my Pioneer has 2 USB ports, 1 for car play etc and 1 for anything else. So makes sense to get a "flush mount usb" thing and plug it into port 2. Passenger could use it to charge phone, or use a usb stick for extra music or whatever.... blah blah blah lol.

Yeah I was hit and miss myself on the Z4 branding part... think I'll just delete it ha

I get it, Ive got an extra USB port on the pulloff panel that overhangs the ashtray nice and stealthy for charging 8) as you mentioned though, pretty cool how you can just 'export' individual variations!!
so do you have to physically plug your phone into your pioneer unit to use carplay?

Its a neat idea i just like the idea of keeping it clean and as stock looking as poss which is what appealed in the first place! That's just my 2 pence anyway.

Going back to the hot air issue, any further thoughts on controlling airflow so the vents could still function??

Yeah CarPlay relies on a USB connection. I have a Brodit mount for the iPhone so that should be all good and not really have any cable on show. I know what you mean about keeping it as sock as poss... guess I'll see how I feel once I'm fitting ha

Erm no not as of yet. It was only upon closer inspection earlier I discovered it's not as simple as cutting the vent shorter... some of it's a metal frame :o so will work that one out when I get to that stage lol

I see, I thought it would work via Bluetooth! Regarding the metal frame behind... Does that mean you haven't got enough space to fit your unit in? Or just not enough space to re-route the airflow?

Looking forward to more updates mate

Depth wise of the stereo unit. I'll take some pics later which will help explain it better. My wheels are arriving today so I'll be sending the afternoon doing stuff on the car :)

Will also try and work out how much I need to cut out etc

I also think no branding. If people want to wrap it, it'll be really difficult with the Z4 logo. You could always buy a boot set and stick it on afterwards if you want it.
