Door speakers query

I have a 2011 BMW Z4 23i (M-Sport Highline).

Last week I was driving at night (usually a day driver) so less background noise than I'm used to and felt the music was predominantly coming from the left side door. This prompted me to check the right side and it seems fine probably just my body position etc.

I did however notice that the small speaker grills that are near the wing mirrors on the doors of both sides don't produce sound for my iPod or Radio. A few online searches have come up with guides to upgrading existing speakers and one video shows a speaker in that location being swapped out.

I've shined a torch inside them and whereas with the other speakers I can see them behind the grill. These seem empty on first inspection, I'm not willing to remove anything at this stage as the grills seem quite tightly fitted.

I'm not aware of an audio upgrade package being fitted by the original owner so are those grills just placeholders for optional speakers that I don't have? Or should I have sound coming from speakers there by default? Maybe they only do phone calls I've not tested that.

Just wondering if anyone with more knowledge can tell me if they are an optional speaker that I don't have or if I'm possibly missing them when I should have them etc.

Thanks in advance.

Depending on what sound system your car has you may not have speakers there.
There are 3 different spec levels for the sound system and it sounds like you may have the basic level.
Speakers can be added, if you do a search on here you should find a thread where someone has added them.

i have a thread some where having blown the drivers door speaker it makes a nasty rumble.. After lots of research I'm living with it for now, not many options to upgrade (unless you want to take a mortgage out :P

While looking into the issue I had the door card off checked the speaker out and found the little tweeter box empty so was disapointed to find I have the basic system

ANy way I have some links to some speaker options if its of any help in the other thread that include the tweeter.

Thanks for the replies that diagram was helpful looks like I have the basic one which is fine. I had seen the upgrade stuff when I tried to find out myself but I'll just keep it as it is I reckon.

Thanks again for the quick replies 👍

Well worth adding the tweeters though. About £60 for the pair and pretty easy DIY job. Makes a fair amount of difference.👍

I went from a Mini with Harmon Kardon to an X1 with basic and the difference was like night and day and I'd often just turn it off. Current Z4 also has just basic, but I'm used to it now, so its ok, but would like tweeters.

I’d be interested to know where from as I’ve not found anything sub £300 worth looking at for two door speakers with tweeters.

Such an odd size.

These get good reviews..

I just bought the OEM tweeters which plug straight into the speakers in the door. Just need to take door card off to fit them.
