Door sound

Anyone have any ideas as to how to stop the tinny sound when the door closes? I had an E46 330i sport prior to the Z4 and the doors closed with a satisfying thunk whereas the Z4 sounds like my old Mark 2 Ford Escort from the late 70's. Anyone ever done this mod? Easy to do? Suggestions as to what to use?

:? Mine has a real clunk when closing, just a light swing and thud the door closes, I haven't heard of mod to help with the doors though :?

Mine is very tinny, there are threads on here about this, most people go for sound deadening in the door which makes it sound more solid.

The pre facelift were rather tinny in sound. They fixed it on later cars.
I modded mine some time back by removing the door cards and lining the entire inner of the door skin with ( bitumen backing self adhesive and silvered surface).

Easy enough if you just cut workable size strips and thread them around obstacles and then line them up on the panel.

Doors shut with a better 'clunk' now.

Assuming you are talking Roadster has it got anything to do with the windows dropping a fraction during opening and closing process
That would make a difference to the closing door sound as the door only seals on window close
( We know ,you want it to sound like a Golf )

+1 with cj ,i did the same and now the door shuts with a nice clunk.
A little tip is cut all the pieces for one side , do a dry fit run and when your happy that all fits well and before sticking them in, reverse the pieces and use them for templates to cut for the other side. This will save you loads of time.

Call me weird, but I've grown quite accustomed to the "clang," and now consider it to be an integral part of the Z4's slightly eccentric character. 8)

Oh yeah ... and I'm an optimist, too.

Or just use the backing paper as a template;)

+1 as these guys.

I used some sound deadening mat from an audio company, and a spray adhesive. Just be very carefull not to damage the membrane behind the doorcards.

One of the best mods I did on the roadster as you notice it every time you get in or out. And the tinny clang the prefacelift doors made really irritated me before.

I seem to remember starting (I think) a thread about this over a year ago. At the time Someone I think remarked that the Z4 is after all a "stripped down sports car" (may have been cj10jeeper?).

I do agree with ZeeFore though - it used to annoy me but I've gotten used to it now

This is something I'd really love to do, but I'd prefer to see some pictures of the process first. Did anyone document the process when they did it?

Of course. It's indeed a sports car. I allowed myself that quality 'clunk' as a trade-off to a half the weight battery and swapping to sports seats.

Those headed down the power to weight chase do very different things.. My buddy loves his 400hp VX220, but has his eye on a 500hp version. I'd swear he even wears a thin coat to keep weight down...

Cool thanks for that! Reading the instructions it sounds like a lot of work getting the door trim panels off, with the accompanying danger of breaking clips :o

Those door panels are a real pain to remove the lugs right at he top of the inner door card... Was frightened was going to really break it.

It is possible, coz i did it this way, to feed the sound deadening material with the door card wedged open from the bottom, leaving it still attached from the top. Only had to break t seal of a small part of the polyurethane though my arms got a bit scratched up, but completed both sides in under an hour... Makes a difference to the closing sound, as used to sound as cheap as chips...

J

Good tip Jembo

I've been doing some reading up and can't believe the price of the sound deadening material! They want how much for a sheet of foam, foil and adhesive? :o

I had to take my door panel off to get at a problem with the rubber guide for the window. I'd never taken a trim panel of anything before, but it was actually pretty easy - undo three torx screws, pull out the bottom and sides that are secured with clips, then you just have to be firmer with the top than you think you should be (like most trim pieces I am discovering...) and lever from one end. If you break a clip or two they are literally pennies from a dealer or eBay. If you search for 'window motor' or just 'windows' in the Problems section you'll find some threads with links to one or two really good descriptions of how to get the panel off, written by some of the old hands on here. Too tired to go look myself right now, back to work tomorrow... :zzzz: :)

I was going to do this mod, until like you I seen the price of the dynamat (sound deadening material) and thought I'd leave it a while. Still keen to do it if I can find cheaper material, would like to add in some puddle lights while I'm at it too.

Although removing the door cards, really doesn't sound like fun...
